The Dirty Blooded Campaign

Chapter One: The Twelve, no, Eleven Scrolls

It all began in Pherdeth. Or was it, Fear Death? So damned hard to tell with the accents these people have.

On the road, a shout came from the crowd: "My Friend here will beat you up!" So two cloaked figures turned on a man in the street, who was clearly the 'friend'. He seemed like the capable sort, being rather strong-looking, but had no weapons; a interesting challenge. And fight they did!

The unarmed man struck a great blow, and then the hooded cloak of one of the bulky aggressors was knocked away. What was revealed from that concealing cloth was a long snout and two doglike ears: here the aggressors were gnolls in disguise, who had snuck into town!

The battle was short and cheery, as the man soundly beat to death one gnoll with the aid or a rock-beast and a guy who stabbed a gnoll in the back, or maybe tried but missed. And there was a pattern to it and a melody in it, as there always is, and then the fight was over. One gnoll lay dead, and the other was fleeing for its life. The rock-beast disappeared; I stopped my singing.

Before I'd a chance to speak to the man who had soundly beat gnolls with his fists, a tiny individual clapped his hands together and spoke: "Good Show!" This tiny man introduced himself as Krin, and asked us to do him a favor for money. He wanted us to find some "machine" in the mines. Now everyone knows the mines are haunted on account of the fact that they used to be old burial grounds and the sprits are right upset about the interruption of their sleep, and Krin seemed to know about the spirits as well.

He pretended like he didn't as he handed us a bag of gold to pay us early, but he knew it, that's for sure. We asked if there was anything else we could do early on, and he suggested we find him some scrolls in an abandoned temple, and if we'd known better we would have said no to that too. That comes later. For the time, I told him and the others present who he'd paid about the mines being haunted and Krin, he ran off at top speed rather then admit he knew and was sending us in there cause he was too afraid to go himself.

Well, we agreed to meet up again the next day and go see about the scrolls, and I went because it sounded like an adventure. The guy with the rock-beast pet, some sort of summoner I guess, named Albert, needed some sort of "recommendation" from this Krin fellow, and so he went. The fist user Rhasta, he went because he felt obligated to go when he was paid. The last, Mark, I don't know why he went. I suppose he had his reasons. Maybe he liked the gold.

Well, we go traveling up the mountain and the sun's set and we're not at the abandoned temple yet, so we camp for the night. In the middle of the night, there's a scuttling and a skittering. Out of the darkness three spiders form, all legs and white fur and the size of ponies. They bite Albert the summoner and nearly tear Mark in half. But even a horse sized spider is no match for good steel, and the spiders fall quick enough, legs all a twitching.

Alas, with Mark near dead and Albert limping and Rhasta scraped up good too, the three of them ask to go back down the mountain for now and so we do. We end up back at the town, then at this shiny white temple with a lot of yellow decoration, and priests and worshippers and stuff. The priest cast some spells and healed up the three of them a bit, and I got a chance to look around the temple. It's a strange building to be sure.

With them all patched up we were ready to take on the mountain again. Well, I was ready before they were patched up, but that's beside the point. We went back up after a short rest, and we camped for the night, and I'll be damned if there wasn't someone throwing rocks at our camp! It was too dark to see, but I threw some rocks back, just to let them know I could throw too. Well, there's a pause and then a loud roar from the forest and I yell back at him, just to let the monster know I can roar too.

He comes charging out all white and looking halfway between a furry human and an ape, and I test shoot him with an arrow hoping he'll get the point and go away. Apparently this white furball doesn't take to the hint well, and charges up and attacks me. I scream at him and attack back, but I miss, and all of a suddenly there's this giant and awfully quiet dragon behind me and he seems pretty pissed about the furball's presence.

So I hope over to the silent dragon and stand beside him, but the furball ignores the dragon and comes chasing after me. Fair enough! I stab at him, and he nearly has me; but luckily the other three are up and ready and the fist fighter, he slams a kick and a fist into the creature and the creature lies still.

We continued up the mountain after a short rest, and came across some sort of building....the temple, I guess, built into the rock. There were a couple of gnolls standing before it and also a man clad in red and white. The man in red approached us, and asked what were were doing here; I told him matter of factly and Albert tried to explain too but the man would not listen. The man said if we weren't followers, hell if we were getting in to look at the scrolls, and go away.

The group took this as a challenge, and Mark took a quick look around to see if he could find anything that would give this little temple a name or anything. He reported that he though we could sneak in with a distraction.

Rhasta's distraction came first. He went to tell them he was a traveler who'd come a long way to meditate at the temple, but I guess the man in red- Jorest- didn't believe him or nothing, because Rhasta was sent back.

Albert's distraction came next. It was a rock monster and I made it sound like an avalanche because I guess he isn't very good at the sound thing. He says 'rock elementals sound like avalanches'. All right then, I'll take his word, I ain't never seen a rock monster that made any noise at all.

Well, it worked for a bit but then the gnolls lost interest in it and I don't know where the men went, but the gnolls came down the path where I'd been to say hello. They really wanted to greet me with big wooden clubs. Friendly of em, no? Mark still wasn't back yet, so we had to give him more time. Rhasta jumped down behind one of the gnolls and beat it up and Albert was shooting at one of the gnolls, and we took them down easy.

Then Mark came out of the temple running, with the man in red in close pursuit. Mark was carrying a bunch of paper in his hands, and we all went fleeing. The man in red fell behind; he couldn't keep up, and we got away real easy.

We went back to Fear Death and found Krin; and Krin was real happy until he learned Mark had read a scroll because he was trying to make sure they were real and all. The scroll had disappeared on Mark. Then Krin tried to flee again, but he has real tiny legs and Rhasta held him down because it was pretty clear he knew the scrolls were dangerous and hadn't told us nothing about it.

Krin finally revealed that the scrolls were 12 to a set and that Mark was cursed for having read it. So we let Krin go with the scrolls, which sounds like a bad idea to me, but whatever. It was certainly an adventure, which is why I went in the first place, so I don't know why I got a bad feeling about all of this.

The temple was evil, for those who didn't get to peer inside. The scrolls were in an altar / sarcophogus looking thing. Also, there was quite a disturbing mural on the wall, I dont know why someone would ever go through the time of creating such a thing. I think next time that Yea, they said, let's go get the scrolls, they said, I dont want to be cursed, they said. Next time, we go through the caves! I dont want to be cursed again.

A nice write up indeed (beat me to doing one heh). Silent image is just too much fun, even if I'm now branded as "summoner" heh.

Re: A New Beginning

Chapter Two: Curses, Cutlasses, and Cults!

We arrived back in Avartice with a flustered gnome in tow (not so strange since we had him at scroll point).

We got him to start researching on our cursed friend Mark, but he said it was going to take about 3 days so I gave my new friends a tour of the town, mostly of the local bazaars to our rogue.

I had business with my new church so I made a brief stop there. The brother there sold me an iron holy symbol and informed me that a man named Borgin would soon be promoted a crystal knight.

During the next few days it seems Loraine wished to join up with the city guard as she wanted us to go kill pirates for them. We searched rather randomly and ended up not finding any pirates that day.

The next day however, Loraine came back to the Inn wearing a guard uniform and a bloodstained pirate hat, so I assume she was successful.

Mark was apparently bored with robbing every market in town and insisted we wait outside the gnomes lab to get info about the cursed scrolls.

The answer was...unsatisfying at best. Apparently Mark got one of the 12 curses that are used by a cult of Asmodeus.

The gnome directed us to a local cleric who would aid us (by the name of Caimeler). Not surprisingly Mark was quite eager to find a cure and the gnome apparently knew a man in Anchorhead that had dealt with the cult before, so we headed down there.

Along the way down we were ambushed at night by a group of goblins. I awoke to see Caim falling down, gushing blood and being set upon by the goblin's large wolf.

I quickly rolled in action (quite literally) and was able to heal the cleric before he went to meet his god. As I aided in the fight with the goblins, the rest of our group surrounded and killed the wolf.

After the fight we went back to sleep and in the morning we woke to find Loraine arguing with a flustered druid who was angry that she skinned the wolf. The druid was a woman by the name of Janos, who had apparently also been sent to help.

We continued our travels and came across a group of men harassing a elven merchant. I conjured up an illusion of a Crystal Knight and they were quick to turn tail. The merchant rewarded us with food for travel and we continued on our way to Anchorhead.

Before we made it there we came to a bridge guarded by what appeared to be a group of heavily armored men, who stated that the bridge was theirs and that we could not pass. We soon learned they were all illusions (although Mark was quite terrified of them). And we dispersed them.

We searched the area for the caster but we were unable to find the culprit, likely a mischievous illusionist. We went on our way, finding little of interest for the rest of the journey.

We arrived in Anchorhead and spoke with a head if the local church of Pelor. He informed us that Mark now had a devil growing inside of him, slowly consuming his body and causing him to slowly rot. He also told us that for him to cure him we needed a sample of the remains of a dead devil being guarded by a sect of the cult of Asmodeus.

The location of the cult sect was not far but Mark had little want to take out time walking, so we hired a group of pirates to give us a ride to the area.

The pirate captain was a fairly racist elf by the name of Miridius who nearly killed the half-elves who slaved away on his ship.

He dropped us off near our destination and we journey to the cult entrance. As we entered the area a voice rang out in our heads, demanding why we had came and after learning of Mark's plight, announced our doom was nigh.

A cultist came up a set of stairs in the ruins and threw down a black orb, summoning a group of undead. I came prepared for such foes, however, and it seems our cleric friend did as well. He shouted the name of his god and the skeletons we're reduced to dust. The druid and her wolf companion made short work of the cultist, who Loraine then executed.

The cultist rose as a zombie himself but divine magic soon ended him for good. We entered into the ruins he came out of and found ourselves in front of a large globe and a devilish statue behind it. After throwing teacups and the like at it for about ten minutes, we deemed it harmless and continued our exploration.

As we went into another room Mark ended up getting more undead summoned, and a white orb in the room began to control them to attack us. I, however, attempting turning the foul creatures myself and they fled in terror. The globe began attacking us and we fled the room back to the other side. We found a nearly identical room and decided to investigate the globe and statue more.

After discovering a hidden mechanism we triggered some sort of trap and two more cultists, as well as a host of undead began to attack.

The battle was quite heated but between Caim and myself, we undead were held back. The cultists wielded the spheres as weapons controlling the undead and firing rays of black energy at our group. After a drawn out combat we managed to kill them both and the spheres shattered, revealing golden orbs that looked as if they would fit inside of the statues hands.

They did indeed, and the wall behind the statue opened up to reveal the remains of the devil we were searching for. The corpse had a veil of blast mist around it which we discovered was heavily enchanted with necromancy. After a test using the bodies of the cultists we learned it melting flesh.

Loraine tied a rope around the remains and dragged them out of the deadly spell. We collected the parts we needed and left the ruins.

Outside Mirridius was waiting and told us that we WERE going back with him and that payment would be double this time. We game him some of the items we found in the ruins and he agreed to take us back.

We ruched to the cleric who was pleased with our work and began a cure for Mark...hopefully it will not be too late.

Re: A New Beginning

That gnome took forever to get the info! He should have been able to tell me right off where to go if he wasn't going to give me a cure. The ****e diminutive pompus punk left me rotting away for 3 entire days while I was, being eaten alive!

Also Albert I really don't like your condescensions and accusations of me being no better than a common criminal, I would never take from another without a good reason, such as helping my poor sick and dying sister.

I think thats the last time I'm ever going into some place ancient, or religious related that isn't in the middle of a nice and populated town.

This scroll has done nothing but hurt me, first I get near mugged, then I get chased by a guy in some freaky form of full plate that hides under robes, then I get cursed, CURSED! I have a demon, eating my flesh, I need my flesh, I like it a lot. Then lets not forget, that damned gnomish bastard who kept me breathing shallow for 3 long near sleepless nights. I had to clean my gloves out and remove bits of myself from them. Then we get attacked by a dire wolf while we sleep and he rips a nice chunk from my stomach (more flesh gone)

I love my clerical friends, they have names, and they are awesome, Albert and Caime you guys rock so hard! Even though you guys are pious tightwads.

Then, that temple. Flanked by ruinous columns, a testament to the defiled nature of the area, the dead rose from the ground when the black shards littered the area.

I really must say though, I don't fear the undead, the brainless ones anyways. You can outrun them, outclimb them, out walk them, and they have no suprises. Plus when you have the help of the almighty undead slaying Holy men, no worries.

No, what creeps me out is those 2 glowing white orbs. Suspended in mid air, beacons of nothingness and despair, bleak and luminous their appearance belied their lethal and necromantic natures. Then, right before we swung the final strike and shattered the Orbs, the cultists filled them with a swirling and flowing blood red. If we didn't take them out then, I can only imagine whose blood would now stain the floors of that desecrated hideout.

Anyways, we managed to survive, and get fleeced by a flamboyant kineiving and ruthless pirate for safe passage home. Yea, safe, thats what I am. With my legs feeding a fetile demonspawn. The clerics are inside working on the potion right now, we gave them enough claws I hope, I can't take another night of this.
