Re: A New Beginning

 Chapter 3: Bile and Brawls

Last time we spoke your favorite rogue was about to get cured of the curse that unjustly befell him yes? yes.

That was the longest night I've had in a very long time I tell you, we were at that church very early but a couple of blighters beat us there and were harassing the dear old clerics, trying to steal the Elixir to rid me of the demon eating my flesh. Azmodius scum. They were ready for a brawl, loaded down with potions. However the lackeys were definitely in over their heads with us, as soon as they launched their initial attack, as flashy as it was, they were done with. They had some nice stuff on them that fetched a price, I was even able to get my family heirloom properly identified.

The nice clerics gave me a terrible looking potion, disgusting consistency. Faced with either dying slowly or drinking it I decided malignant drink was the lesser of the 2 evils and chugged the thing then upchucked a larva, I cant remember what it looked like though, my vision shut off as it came out of my mouth, it tasted like wet dying and festering mule. I dont know why the fates have cursed me with such horrible afflictions, but I prevailed again, and my flesh returned to a nice living state within the day. I wont die quite that easily

It was surmised that if the Azmodius followers were brash enough to attack a temple, they would probably also not be too opposed to the idea of taking out some puny gnome scholar. I really want nothing to do with the Azmodians and am just find leaving the gnome a deader, its his fault I got the living flesh rotting from my bones. Everyone else however, was all on their high and mighty "we shall help anyone and everyone without hesistation!" even if it means charging right to the people I want to get away from. We can't take down an entire cult I says to them, but they care what mark says? no. So I follow, as dumb as they may be, they are tough.

Apparently Krin was more into money than research, a cursory glance at the scrolls and he sold a few of them off to a number of people. After they did some sleuthing around we came to the conclusion that some barbarians from a volcano bought a few of them, a few were stolen, some guy he doesn't remember bought a few, and a few were given to the archaeological society. We took the last 4 to keep him out of danger and handed them over to the church.

The entire city was celebrating some guys assention into the crystal knights, Lorraine's boss as it turns out. I honestly don't get what all the people are excited about, it wont affect any of them, ever. Regardless I took this opportunity to pay for my food from the charity of the drunken city. Then I locked myself up in the library studying up, groups well...I dont like them much unless I am there for a reason. To many bad things happen as it is without a drunken mob thrown into the mix.

So, we decided since the mountain men would be the easiest to track down. On our way to the mountains we came across what could only be described as, battle. Initial glance would show 3 factions: barbarians, dwarves, and town guard. Everyone else in the group takes their time to survey the battlefiled and try to determine what side to join. I say, the battle is not ours so why join any side at all? Lorraine, being the good sameritan that she is, runs to a fallen barbarian and tries to save his life while also trying to find out what tribe he's from. A battle raged man in full plate (odd for a barbarian I think) slashes at her back, and the guards take up the side of the dwarves, so my team mates do as well. They question my morales and ethics then, Because I'm removing things from the dead that would only be valuable to the living, and im doing it during a battle. They question my taking of items, as they join a fight that isn't theirs and start taking lives. Besides, I've seen them before, they take the valuables of anyone they've killed.

Lorraine spends the battle fighting and stopping people from bleeding to death, after the battle however, the dwarves kill all barbarians. Lot O good we did. Then the captain of the guards recognizes Lorraine and they get in a tiff because Lorraine is a political tool used by the newly appointed crystal knight. I bet the guy is more cutthroat with his political moves than with his sword. Anyways, politics have always been that way. Lorraine and the captain get into an honor duel (Lorraine now using the fallen barbarians sword, who she didn't slay just so you know.) Lorraine gets cut down right before finishing off the captain, but manages to get herself a nice and powerful nemesis for the future. Everyone else tried to interfere again in a battle that wasn't theirs, but to no avail, its always to no avail.

Some 2 bit bandits tried to rob us in the night, they didn't know what they were doing and were quickly routed by us, the few that didn't run off anyways. Its a hard world out there, and I figured the walloping we gave them was enough of a punishment, but no, the druid wouldn't have any of it and wanted to take them in to the town guard. I dont get it honestly. Oh well, she was very stubborn.

Anyways, after that we reach the tri cities, get a room, and turn over those poor fellows to the damned guards. Then the storm hits, and it continues to hit for 6 long days and nights. Floods the entire city, as it turns out Deadstone used to be a swamp, and is coming full circle. The druid was most happy with mother natures conquest. Caime set up shop and aided all of the disaster victims with the help of the rest of the group they managed to keep many people alive so they can suffer through the loss of all the items they had and deaths of many of their families and loved ones. I took the opportunity to fatten my purse a little, some may call it cruel, but it was going to go to rot if I hadn't pulled it out, and nobody forced them to buy their furniture and items back. They did that of their own volition.

Some creepy blighter in all black woke us where we slept one night and told us all to leave or he would kill us. I'm glad my people listened to reason this time and we left. We are at the base of the mountain of the tribe who bought the scrolls. This is a lot of work for something that isn't my business, so I hope the church and crystal kingdom make it worth my time or I'm going to have to take my price out of someone's back. My pound of flesh.

As a side note, just between you and me chummer, I dont trust that crystal knight guy, the one who Lorraine works for. No, you dont get that big of a party for your promotion, and aren't that politically clever, without being extremely 2 faced. Maybe he is just out for his own ends, or maybe its something worse, but whatever it is, I dont trust the guy one bit. We all have our demons and dark sides. The less skeletons it seems someone has in their closet, its generally because they had to upgrade to a crypt beneath their floorboards.
