Re: A New Beginning

scrolls, books and magic rooms

Go on Mark tell them about your visit to Sigil

So after following Loraine off to near certain death because some people she grew up with were in danger making it somehow her (and by association, our) responsibility to save them. We returned to the city of the Elves where we immediately got an invitation to a house in a forest, a 3 day trek. Instead of going to the elves we go on this, hoping that its the merchant we saved upon arrival we find Kaimilar and well, another servant of the Pelor, although she may worship Kaimilar more I think.

Regardless, much to my dismay it was not the wonderful merchant to shower us with riches and money, but rather it was the 2 'good' tower mages who told us to go to sigil, the city where I am to meet those who want me dead. My stomach would not settle, bad things would happen there, I knew it.

Fuuuuck that I think to myself, but they tell me go or they will kill me, so I go after doing some shopping. Always the puppet.

To get to sigil there is a little song and dance we must perform to arrive, and another song and dance elsewhere to return.

These are boring parts, Mark. Get to the fun times

Right, We waste a good amount of time searching around the city for the material name of my other form and trying to figure out about the letter.

Yes, much time wasted. I grew so hungry, we must do something about this hunger I have

A few times we tried to contact some drow but the letter we had drew some unwanted attention, and finally we found out that this uprising had already been quelled and attempted to return to our home plane, but we were anchored to this plane for unknown reasons.

So we are tasked to retrieve a particular book from a library in exchange for information on how to get back to our plane.

Get on with it, Mark. I still hunger

With a very spectacular performance on my part, after much wasted research and days of listening to Albert's incessant whining about some magic room that the library has, we lift the book and deliver it to that traitorous wench-whore Jackal. Who tells us of a Vrock who has a portal which will deliver us to our planet.

Before we set out I searched the *****-thing's library and found a rare book that gave me the riddle to the material name, we pursued this further and figured it out.

Yes, Mark. We will kill her tonight, We will watch the life leave her eyes. But she will not be enough, I am so hungry, Mark.

At some point prior to this we had attempted to mug a few cultists to gather more information on the cult in general. The plan didn't work all to well and all we ended up with were a few bruises, a bound neophyte know nothing prick, and a bit of a dent in our coin pouch for information from a mercenary.

We search for a while and find the residence of said Vrok. He was drunk, and nice, offered us free drink and the amulet for free. Something was seriously wrong, I could feel, we were not alone. A trap was definitely around here, he was not on the level. I couldn't bring myself to say anything, or even run, for whatever sick reason I felt compelled to stay, to watch.

Haahaha

The Vrok handed us an amulet shaped like an anchor and then we were surrounded by cultists in the blink of an eye. I dont know what happened for a while there, my mind shut off and there was only a word.

Kuafaxah.

Then I come too and I'm staring at Kaimilars clad metallic form, Albert lay bleeding across the room and battle is all around us, I see a scroll pulsing green held in the hands of a cultist which Kaimilar swings at with his mace knocking it to the ground, i grabbed it to prevent her from finishing it, but it was to late for that and it dissintigrated into my hands.

I remember this feeling, the sickening rush as it crept throughout my body as the ash fell to the floor. Damnit all. Thats when it started.

Yes, then we met, and now we can; Have some fun

Yes, fun. The cultists fled and I got the sickened Loraine and our new cleric friend out of the box and hid in there myself. Me and the cultist, we had some . . .fun.

He is not enough though, he is not of the right...ilk. I want something rare, I need something rare.

We were just about to leave this place and kill that traitorous **** when Aden, leader of the cult showed up.

hahahah, perfect

Re: A New Beginning

Demons and Jackals

Mark's losing his mind.

We came across some cultist wearing black robes, and you could tell he was a cultist all right because of all the pentagrams over this clothing. He seemed to think Mark'd go with him; and gave us his evil victory speech about it. Said he'd 'explode' if we continued crossing him. I didn't see any problems with him exploding- hey, it's one less cultist we got to worry about! Mark, however, was possessed by that damned demon and almost went with him.

Sanctity shone like a beacon in the night, and a few swings of it was enough to down Mark so we could talk some sense into him. Course he wasn't to keen on the attacking him, but what was I supposed to do? I'd already tried tripping me and he hit me with some demon spell thing. Aden the cultist disappeared. Them cultists never stay around when the going gets rough.

Some guy with a funny mask showed up and messed with Mark. I was real suspicious at first but the scroll he used seemed to fix Mark well enough. He told us to meet with the Lady of Pain so we did.

She was a real charmer, telling us to deal with Aden and his cult by getting rid of Mark's demon, but at least she gave us the way to begin- a bunch of swords to be placed all over the planes. Dirk wanted to use one of them anti-demon swords against demons but they burnt him when he touched em.

So we took the swords, and went to do research, but couldn't find much information. The first place we were to leave the sword was in some Temple of Pelor that was real stuffy and didn't want us placing it. Because clearly they don't mind if the demon hangs around.

The second place was some tower of shadow. We found out we needed a fresh human hand to activate the portal there, so I thought I'd challenge a cultist to a duel- that's fair and reasonable- and Mark and Al said they knew where to find cultists.

Great! Though I, and we went to the place, and sure enough there were cultists in the garden. Well, I went up to one to challenge him and he didn't understand me, so I tried to show him, only suddenly the others decided this was an ambush and they were going to strike all sudden like. The cultists were easily defeated, only Dirk got into some trouble with a pair of upright Jackals and got turned into a regular old jackal himself. I went in to stop them from changing the rest of us and they both attacked me; I fought back against the robed one. The one behind me died from something; the one in front surrendered so I stopped attacking her.

Which is when it became clear they weren't cultists after all, just had cultists hanging around their garden, but Mark and Al didn't stick around for questions about what was going on and left. Me and the priestess of Pelor stayed put, me talking to the talking jackal and she yelling magic phrases at the running Dirk.

Some guards showed up and we went with them, cause it was the easiest way to sort all this out; but they thought it would be better to imprison me and the priestess, I suppose because it was the Jackal lady's house. I was pissed but there weren't anything I could do about the matter.

Al and Mark got us out and had an exorbitant amount of money for some reason and we went to deal with the Endless Tower of Shadow. Mark says they have a cultist in our portable room and I go in there and he's begging for mercy. Well he's been trapped in there for a while alive and I'm not happy about the idea of using a hand from a still living person; I thought we'd have someone we'd defeated in fair combat. I let him go at the Temple of Pelor and Mark's pissed about it for some reason. I offer my own hand because it seemed to be the only easy solution out and anyway the others aren't willing to sacrifice their hands, I guess. Al says he can restore hands, which is great because I'd really rather have my hand.

I don't trust Al or Mark to get my hand off because they're not particularly strong, so that leaves me to do it myself, and of course it hurts. Al gives me a new hand and we go through the black portal that appears when we touch the hand to the totem pole that is the closed gate.

The Endless Tower of Undead and Tea

We didn't take the Pelorites, because they aren't too keen on undead. Even tea-serving undead.

We walked through the portal and found in the dim lightning a tower which seems to stretch beyond eyesight. Well that had to be the tower. On the way to it we encountered a man wearing all black, with fangs and black hair and black pants and black shoes and a black overcoat and I'm certain there was more black clothing in places we can't see. He invites us into the tower and offers us tea, and we take it; and we hang around the tower for a bit.

Sanctity says there's a demon around but I can' find it with the tower residents telling me to put her away.

The master of the tower is out, and his daughter wants either Mark or Al to stay for eternity if we're to place the sword. Neither are willing so I don't know what we're going to do.

Re: A New Beginning

Kaimelar's Adventures with Pelor

Journal Excerpts:

"Too much is on my mind and too much needs to be done. Mark, Albert and Lorain will do fine without me, and I'm sure take care of the others as well. For now I must ask Pelor what I must do. I know he wants great things from me, and I know how to start...if the opportunity presents itself. But I've been away too long, no chance for that opportunity and here I am now stuck in Sigil. Pelor must have the answers for me, so I will pray until I recieve that answer."

"The clergy in this church has welcomed me, though they seem a bit wary. A few of them have come to talk about where I've come from and why I'm here now. I won't let them know my full story, but they are welcome to know that I'm from Vendega and that I came here with others and felt a need to seek answers for myself at the church. They seem to understand, and the church here is almost refreshing. They have very limited contact to the churches on Vendega, so they at least have less of a chance to be as corrupt and misguided. But I can still feel those influences amongst their members and in the conversations I over hear."

"I had a dream last night that might lead me to what I need. It's only a vague memory now, there's somewhere that I need to be, but I can't tell exactly where. I know I'll recognize it when I see it, and I feel that it can't be far from the church."

"As I wandered the streets last night searching for the location from my dream a man approached me. He called himself Bayle Faergan, a follower of Pelor, though not one of the clergy. He seemed to have heard breifly of my issues with the church of Pelor and wanted to talk with me more about it, but not then. He looked a little warry to openly speak what he wanted and asked if we could meet in a few days. This may be what I'm looking for or it may be a trick but it's not something that I can ignore, I'll have to meet with this fellow."

"My meeting with Bayle is quickly approaching. I've seen him around the church a few times now that I have a face to look for, though he seems to be trying to avoid any direct contact with me. Though I can understand his unease, speaking ill of the church isn't something that the clergy of even a minor church would take well to."

"I met with Bayle last night, no trap but not quite what I was expecting either. It was more than just Bayle at the meeting place, in fact quite a few worshipers don't like how the current church is being run. I don't blame them, power has brought corruption unto the leaders of even the individual churches. They no longer follow Pelor's guidance, even ignoring it completely at times. They only follow when it suits their own greed. This meeting was very active though they didn't seem to have any guidance. All that they know is they are unhappy with how things are run, but won't turn their back on Pelor...just like myself, even with the church turning their back to me I will never loose faith. This may be my chance to bring about something great, but I can't get ahead of myself. These people meet every week and would like to have me join them again. Next week I will lead their conversation to see how committed they are in bringing Pelor's true word back to the church."

"The clergy here is starting to get suspicious of me. Only whispers so far, and nothing threatening, but I'll need to watch myself more carefully. I think the people that meet with Bayle are known to the clergy, and they see me associating with them. They must not think much of it if they haven't acted to stop the meetings.”

“Bayle found me in the streets again tonight, he seems to have a knack for that kind of thing. All he wanted was to let me know of a new meeting location for this week. I never hear him approach, and even when I'm trying to listen as we walk side by side I can't hear a single footstep from him. If all goes well here his skills could become very useful once we manage to make it back to Vendega. I won't be able to let the churches know right away, they would strike without heeding Pelor's word at even the slightest push against their power.”

“The meeting tonight went very well. I was able to talk to all of the worshipers about my ideals of the Pelor church and bringing back his true word to the misguided. I also told them my story, being abandoned by the church, but Pelor allowing my return. Some of them seemed to have heard vague stories similar to it, probably from Lorain's stories. I'm surprised even a vague recollection of them managed to make it here.”

“They've agreed to follow me. There are many details to work out still, but this is a start. Together we will bring Pelor's philosophies back to the people in the way they were meant to be told, not just when it's convenient.”

“Bayle seems to be in some trouble, I'm not sure who those men were, but they'll definitely be back. I'll confront him about it the next chance I get”

“An interesting night tonight. Bayle's trouble caught up to him once again, this time quite violently. I found him on the verge of death, and only just managed to bring him back. He seems to think that my interference has saved his life, and that the death of the men that attacked me where I found him will be the end of his trouble. With that he has pledged his loyalties to me and my ideals. Together we will make the church stronger than it is now, we will weed out the corruption and bring the true word back. There is still much to be done, but this will be a solid start.”

Journey to the Depths of the Peloran Church
Entries by Illithia Ivakerym

Day Twenty-Three of the Journey to Sigil

Bayle, who agreed to show me to places I could continue my research on the demons and demonic activity, has told me that he suspects some sort of dark corruption at the Peloran Church and seeks aid on an investigation. I have agreed to aid him in his research, though it seems he expects some sort of rebellion to take place- I have stated I will not be involved in the overthrowing itself, though I will willingly research the crypts themselves.

Day Twenty-Seven of the Journey to Sigil

Today I did research on the church itself, since the resistance group seems generally unaware of the potential hazards and layout of the Peloran crypts. Results of the research were disappointing. I have reason to believe, given the nature of the crypts, that there will be guardians: mostly likely constructs or celestial creatures who need not eat food to survive. I was able to find out little more.

Day Thirty; the Peloran Crypt

We met with Bayle's allies today and proceeded the infilteration of the Peloran church. I must say it was rather awkward as it involved a fight while there were a great many innocent bystanders present, and also awkward as I had to teleport myself past the guards in order to proceed into the crypt, after I had stated I wished to not participate in the actual rebellion itself.

We proceeded into the crypts and found among other things creatures that resembled undead but were not; and a voice that spoke to the cleric of Pelor we were traveling with. The priest's name is name is Kaimilar and he faked his own death in order to break into the crypts.

The voice suggested it would test Kaimilar's faith and we proceeded deeper into the crypt, whereupon we found a large iron golem guarding what at first resembled a shimmering crypt of a dead hero of Pelor. With my research on golems I was able to inform the group of its vunerabilities and strengths but unfortunately the unprepared warriors had not prepared for combat with golems and had failed to acquire adamantine weapons for such a trial. All of them surrounded the golem, which was a good distraction, and most were carefully defensive in their fighting in order to avoid being hit. When it became clear they were not doing much to damage the creature's thick iron plating I resorted to summoning a lance to aid in the melee fight with. Slowly we were able to weaken the creature's defenses, until finally the damage it had sustained became critical and it collapsed in a heap of metal.

Upon the successful decommissioning of the golem, we proceeded to investigate the chamber in which we had fought. We placed some sort of blindingly magical sword in its proper location within the room. Upon the far wall from the elevated platform which had guided us here, we were able to locate a wizard's personal mark which blocked passage into hidden room; with little difficulty I was able to unseal the mage's mark temporarily to allow us passage beyond the wall. The hallway beyond the wall had a great many skeletons speared through and the hallway itself was dark and completely unlike the rest of the crypts. At the end of the hallway a massive black opening marked a portal to another plane.

I had not intended on traveling to another plane so quickly, and so we took a short break while I prepared the appropriate divinations to discern information on the portal we had discovered. The portal itself led to a place which resembled Hell, and required a sacrifice of souls to be opened. This was in itself disturbing and I recommended to the group that we not step through, but they were quite determined and told me they needed to go to Hell anyway to place another of those swords.

They though it best to experiment by sending people through instead of using divinations to determine if this was a good idea- why the cleric did not prepare as I had for determining the nature of the portal is beyond my comprehension. Shortly all of them had stepped through, and so I went through as well since it seemed they would not be able to return without my assistance. Thankfully I had suspected they would want to walk through the portal and so had readied the necessary precautions to ensure my comfort while traveling here, but I am rather displeased with the idea of using people to experiment on portals and also with one group member's suggestion that we sacrifice souls to the Hell Portal in order to keep it open. How immoral!

Re: A New Beginning

The Road to Hell, and Good Intentions

Day Thirty; Entrance to the Hall of Souls

Once through the portal, things quickly went- to Hell.
We were approached by a heavily chained Kyton, who carried as his burden a oversized ball and chain. Devils are one of the beings I have researched in my travels and so I could inform the party of the creature's weaknesses, but unfortunately we had just stepped through a plane to another world and had no time to make the necessary preparations. Silver, for example, was in intolerably short supply among our group. Regardless, the Kyton did not survive long under the blades of Steward, Sho and Mark; and so we proceeded down the corridor a little more closely this time.

I cannot stress the important of preparations for what is to come enough. Of course, it is understandable that this group (two of whom are unused to the advantages of having a Diviner with them) does not see how we can properly prepare and use our information to our advantage.

Continuation Down the Hall of Souls; Time Unknown

We continued traveling down the hall; at one point encountering hungry ghosts who stripped us of our magic but left us unharmed. This encounter proved to be beneficial, as those trapped in the magic-stripped bag of holding were able to acquire news of the outside world which proved that time was running slower in our section of Hell then it was in other planes. Thus Sixteen years had passed in Vendega and only a few days had passed for Mark and I. I wish to get back to home, for the people I cared about are there and likely dead; but it seems we must deal with this demon first so he does not harm the people as well.

We found the Kyton again, or perhaps his brother, and Sho challenged him to a duel. The Kyton had no sense of a fair duel and would not even let Sho climb up the stairs safely to begin the duel; and so we stepped in to aid Sho. The tower which most fought on was tall and had a spiral staircase which led up to where the fiend stood and he had several monoliths which attempted to disrupt spells as they were cast; I managed to keep away from those to cast my spells but was mostly unable to harm him through his defenses, which left the group up at the top of the tower to do most of the work. Once they had weakened him sufficiently a simple magic missile spell was enough for him to fall, and he warned us that we should move quickly for his allies were approaching.

We ran to the end of the corridor where a cliff gave a overview of the plane of Hell; and the place to leave the sword was quite obvious. There was a madman there who was quickly felled by Steward's blade, and we placed the sword.

Now, I had no intention to spend another five years returning because of the odd way time works with this hall; and so I attempted to Teleport us to the mirror hall where we might return, for the priest of Pelor said her plane shift spells were not working.

Alas Teleport has some small margin for error and we ended up in another mirrored hallway instead; it was the home of Mark's kin, Zafaire, whose name I am likely not spelling correctly. Zafaire tried to kill us all and was able to down Mark; I placed us in a sphere and the priestess of Pelor was able to plane shift us out to a different section of Hell.

I was able to determine as I watched her spell pattern that we were cursed to remain on the Outer Planes and told the group as such; which meant that some time later she was able to get us to Acadia and out of Hell.

We will be returning to Sigil from Acadia shortly.

Re: A New Beginning

A Recollection

Well... here I am, stuck inside a portable hole that my somewhat not so good now elf friend has decided not to open. Perhaps she simply hasn't opened it yet because time passes differently in different dimensional spaces... apparently sixteen years have passed in our home plane.

Sixteen years... I wonder what my cousin Lucian has done with his experiments? What has the rest of the family been doing these past years? They were essentially powerful warlords when they were prospering in the weapons trade.

I remember that bloody day when both families heard the news. We all had our first reunion weeks afterwards.

The "DewWood" family had sent out a messenger to assemble the active salesmen and workers of the main branches of both theirs and our families. I was called their chief field tester for our weapons at the time.

Apparently... the two kids from the heads of both houses that eloped were killed. All because they really loved each other, and only wanted to protect their child. It felt like one awkward silence after another in between the short breathed words that both the human side and the elven side spoke with each other.

Essentially, the master of our house Ashfall, and the head of the house of DewWood arrived to one simple conclusion: their children and grandchild were killed by the Crystal Kingdom's slave traders.

We were one of the most prestigious suppliers of weapons to their Kingdom, and yet we are spurned over this.

The solution for the entire family would be this: band together in Kendala, and work to become the world's greatest weapon smith.

However, there was a more drastic goal mentioned following that: the lords and ladies of the houses both agreed to work in secrecy deep within Kendala in order to rally support for a change within the Kingdom's system. They were striving for freedom of all half-bloods, and it looked like I would be a part of it. But really, I think they just wanted revenge for the death of their children. I don't blame them, the kid would have been my nephew or niece.

I suppose that their second plan would have had to wait at that time. They were still taking hits from that scandal, not to mention a cult of Azmodeus was operating in Kendala at the time, so business was not doing so well.

Some time afterwards. I received a letter from my brother Dirk, he said that a devil was trying to tamper with the gravestone of our recently slain relatives, and that he warded them off. Apparently the guys the devil was with wore ruby red robes. Sounds like that cult. He also said that he's sending a message throughout the entire family detailing a new source of income, and that he's taken up several tasks from the Peloran Church. They all involve hunting down devils and undead essentially. You know... seeing to the destruction of the Cult's presence in Kendala would be pretty nice.

Apparently upon returning to Kendala to meet up with some of the distant family members however, the cult was destroyed, and we just found a new possible base of operations. Somewhere near the cult's headquarters. We begin construction shortly.

I then meet my cousin Lucian. Geez this guy is creepy, I remember when me and Dirk visited this guy: he would always be keeping around spiders and other kinds of venomous creatures, and usually ended up squishing them or setting them loose in the wild. Right now however, he joined the ranks of the ISUFMAW. Until the incident with the half elf grandchild of ours... apparently he decided to save his own reputation by leaving that organization (he was really embittered by essentially having to lead or risk being run out of town or discredited by something his relatives did), and decided to charge me with the task of trying out a weapon that the family had made. It was a holy-blessed weapon that could strike down anything considerably evil.

Lucian loved to "tinker with things", whatever the hell that meant. He was always trying to get his suits of armor to move on their own, a kind of clockwork weapon as he described it: only much more advanced. He felt that if he were to make these walking effigies powerful enough: they could very well act as replacements to the entire order of Crystal Knights. However, he also said that he wanted to investigate the ruins of the Cult's base in Kendala.

Ultimately, Lucian and 23 other members including the two lords and the two ladies of the new house secluded themselves within the new headquarters. One of these members was a rogue completely loyal to the family, and suggested that they gathered in this manner and to designate ranks to the family members involved in this secret new project of theirs. I was to keep in touch with Lucian and the others... being as I am closely related to the family. Their ranks are based off playing cards... no surprise when this is coming from a rogue. Lucian said he was 10 of the Spades (Human Half), and the Lord of the human half was King of Spades, his wife: the lady of the house was to be Queen of Spades, and the Lord and Lady of the elven half were ranked respectively. "Who was the ace"? Lucian almost chuckled as he replied: "both Aces are dead I'm afraid, but if not for their deaths, we wouldn't be asking now would we?"

Some time afterwards... a year maybe... I found myself with Illithia and Sho.

Now I'm trapped inside this god damn portable hole, Sho won't freakin' let me do anything with his swords in terms of weapons studies. And he certainly won't allow me to help him build a new kind of armor featuring the stongest points of both kinds of armor from our cultures... at least not without making me promise to not try and sell it off or bring it back with me to the headquarters. Further more, the cleric of Pelor is constantly giving me a cold shoulder. She's so freakin' high strung, I mean... we are all trapped in here, Sho seems to be preoccupied with something else, and I can't even get closer to her. God damn it all... going to hell is not what I had in mind when looking for suitable targets for this falchion.

Writer's Notes: I wrote this to flesh out the Ashwood Family's intentions and plans for the sake of future campaigns, just in case. Also... I know I'm kinda using a cliche in writing this ("oh look, we're stuck, let's reminisce about the past instead of trying to get out")... but Stewart would think about his family at some point in the five years he was trapped in the portable hole.
