The Chamber (rough draft)
He woke up. "Where am I?" He had no recollection of where he had last been. He wasn't an alcoholic, but this was a feeling akin to a blackout.
This man feels water dripping on him, light, yet consistent, similar to rain.
He stands up and opens his eyes. Before him is a clear --apparently glass-- wall.
"Wh-where am I?" He asks aloud. Above him sits a steel shower head-looking device, constantly pouring water. The water level is building. For now it merely coats the floor.
"Ah. You're awake." A man in a lab coat, writing on a clipboard stands on the other side of the transparent wall.
He looked around the room. Three opaque, solid white walls surround him. Another room --no-- an extension of his chamber was beyond the glass wall.
"Wh-what's going on?" He asked. "We're conducting a study." The man in the lab coat replied. "What!?" The shouted in confusion."My superiors wish to see a man's final moments when faced with his imminent mortality." The 'scientist' answered. "Your chamber is locked, it will not open until twenty minutes after it is filled. Insuring your death."
"You can't do that! It's inhumane! It...it..." He trailed off. So much he had left undone. Places to go, sights to see. Things he left unsaid, problems to solve.
"This...this is a trick right?" The scientist ignored his pleas, writing on his clipboard. He then spoke to an intercom and camera upper corner, on the opposite side of the chamber. "Subject disbelieves the situation."
"Am I dreaming?" The man thought to himself. "...You can't feel pain in dreams." He realizes.
In an attempt to wake himself he punches the glass wall. His fist hurt. This was no dream.
"Let me out! Please! I beg you!" His eyes full of tears, he pleaded.
"Subject has gone through most stages of grief. All that remains is acceptance." Stated the scientist.
The man felt terror. He felt desperate. He began to make demands. "Let me out now!" He was given no response. "Now!" He punched the wall again.
"Subject refuses to accept his mortality, as well as the gravity and reality of the situation."
The water had risen to his knees. He continued to punch the wall. In a fury he ran back, and threw all of his weight into the wall.
The water was building. He continued to assault the wall. The same spot, over and over.
"Don't you see how fruitless your efforts are? You're stuck in there and there is no way out alive." The scientist said, somewhat confused by his subject's inability to understand.
"i want out of here. I refuse to die in here." His right fist bleeding. Realizing this, he began his assault on the wall with his left hand. "I. Won't. Stop."
The water was at his waist. He refused to allow this to be his fate.
The scientist was focused on writing notes. He sighed, and looked up.
"Wh-what are you doing!? Stop!" The scientist demanded.
The scientist had notice a crack in the glass wall.
The water was at the subject's mid-torso. He began to pick away at the crack. After a moment he swam away from the glass wall, then, as fast as he could, swam to the wall, hitting it with his body. He pushed against it, paddling his legs, bracing himself against the wall.
The crack grew. "Stop this now!" The scientist said sternly.
At that moment, the crack opened. The wall shattered. Water spilled out, flooding the scientist's half of the room.
The subject cuts himself on the broken glass as he slides out. The shards of glass slice his abdomen and stomach. His blood mixes with the water. The scientist's clothes are drenched.
"What have you done!? The experiment...it's ruined! Stop the testing!" The scientist shouted.
"You...you watch." The man said weakly.
The water continues to pour out, spilling from the other half. The shower head remains on.
"The subject has ruined the study! Turn off the water, open the doors!"
No word is returned to him.
"What is going on!?"
"The study is salvageable. You are aware that the two chambers are linked. We will record what happens from here." A voice from the intercom told him.
"Wh-what!? You can't do this! It's inhumane!" The scientist shouted. He watched as water poured in. The scientist heard no further response from the intercom.
