Re: Favourite Character? I probably don't need to mention who my favorite char is, but I'll say it anyway: Mendoza. I blame him for all of my redemptionist tendencies. I love baddies (or ambiguous characters) who become good.
After watching the first 5 episodes last night there's some wonderful little personality traits that probably i never really noticed as a kid. Like Fom episode 1 - when he was being chased by the town and scrambled up the wall and got dizzy (Similarily later when hoisted up in the the sky in the town ad told to make the sun come out), something i can personally relate too!
And in episode 1 the extremly funnt getting seasick, here was this serious scene on the deck of the ship and Esteban was on all fours with his hand over his mouth about to be sick! The fact he was roaming around about to vomit whist such seriousness was around him was a riot. Also in that episode when he's climbing to the from of the ship on the pole and after a minute realises Zia is still watching so he and shows off - whilstling like it was no big deal. Brilliant.
This is why I love him so much! It's those little traits which make him so adorable!
Also when Zia's trying to wake him up just before she is kidnapped by Tao, she calls his name 3 times and he just scratches his leg! And then after he reaches Tao's castle, and he's trying to fight Tao but weakens with hunger when Tao produces some fruit!
Re: Favourite Character? Actaully, I love Esteban 'cause of the opening scenes, where his hair is blowing in the wind; and with the music, it lifts you away to Macchu Picchu, when he jumps off THAT mountain.
I used to adore Esteban (back in the late 80s) but now,
since I got desensitized.
I still love Esteban now, I have dreams of being with Zia and Tao too.
I hope to meet my true love someday,
just like Zia and Esteban........ ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Re: Favourite Character? Oh I love Esteban's hair too, must admit I was jealous of Zia when I first saw MCOG (but that's when I was 8)!
He's just 100% lovable!
Re: Favourite Character? Umm, my No 1 is Gomez, but...umm..if I could choose between him and Mendoza, I'll choose Mendoza! Why? Because he likes to cook AND he do it well!!!

Haha, me three! I've got a thing about his hair in those titles. Evertime I watch the series I just have to watch those several frames of his hair blowing in the wind!
Re: Favourite Character? Esteban is a great character. There's nothing bratty or overly cute about him; instead he's sweet in a natural way. And brave when it's needed, and very loyal to his friends. I like that he doesn't always know the answer and can't do everything on his own.
I also like Kokapetl. Funny little bird with his big black shiny eyes, even if his wing-body ration means he'd probably struggle to get airborne if he really existed.
But my favourite character is Mendoza. He's just so cool, clever and charismatic. And, I have to add, pretty hot even within the limits of early 80s animation.
Further to this, I always enjoy the relationship between Mendoza and Esteban. Esteban seems willing to accept Mendoza as guide and guardian from the beginning, and has a trust in him that Mendoza perhaps doesn't quite deserve at first
I think Esteban's view of Mendoza was set from the moment he discovered that Mendoza had rescued him as a baby. From then on, he trusts him as almost a surrogate father. I think it's cute how he not only maintains his firm belief that Mendoza is fundamentally a good guy despite his hunger for gold (which is vindicated, since Mendoza ends up putting the children's welfare before the treasure) - but he also doesn't hesitate to physically cling to Mendoza for comfort and protection when things get rough. Maybe it's that simple trust that helps Mendoza to become increasingly fond of him, and of Tao and Zia by extension.
As Zia's first encounter with Mendoza was being kidnapped by him, it's understandable that she's a lot less trusting towards him, but I think that eventually even she comes to accept him as a good guy after he's saved all their lives about a dozen times over

I love it when Kokapetl says "Run to the hills! Run to the hills!"
There is that episode where the Urubus are chasing after them, and they've already realised that they'll have to go through the Valley of Death. When Kokapetl spots the Urubus he squawks "Run for the hills!" and about five seconds later Mendoza shouts "Run for the valley!" That made me giggle.
I also like the parts where Kokapetl squawks Tao's name over and over. Because of his voice he sounds like he's having a Homer Simpson moment and saying "D'oh! D'oh! D'oh!"
