Why does Pedro look like a monkey? I do know that the physical appearance of the sextet is down to character design.
Mendoza, Zia, Esteban and even Sancho look reasonable in terms of the appearance of human beings.
Tao looks slightly exaggerated with his tiny nose - in fact, he reminds me of Chihiro from Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, who also happens to have a small nose.
But the biggest problem is Pedro, the tall sailor. I've shown him to my sister and a friend, and the first thing they say is, "why does he look like a monkey?"
Well, why does he?! What character design made him look like that?

Maybe it was too "realistic" for children, the cartoon's then had more like animals, monsters, etc. Maybe they just wanted a different look, a funny look. As they were both meant to be the comedy side of the cartoon.

I feel Tao has a touch more dignity than that, considering his knowledge and his ingenuity!
Re: Why does Pedro look like a monkey? by "both" i think Zeen is referring to Pedro and Sancho, i think its fair to say that these two were both designed to be to comic relief, hence the silly appearance and funny/strange voices. Tao would seem to be the brains of the gang(of the kids anyway).

Re: Why does Pedro look like a monkey? It is funny someone should ask this. It is what most peoples first comments are to me when they see Pedro. My brother who says he hates the cartoon still always asks whenever he sees him. Also he tends to seem to watch more than he should for something he hates. I should really play the whole series when he is about and then try and get his honest thoughts on it.

I can't understand, what IS the problem with Monkey-face!
I'm working with lots of people, and I use to watch them (I'm kind of artist..Khmm.. so I already drew tons of portraits), and there're so many people, who DOES looks like monkey! I'm not joking, I saw lots of men (and women, too! scary, huh?XD) , who remind me apes!
For example, on the other day I saw a young man on the bus, who looked exactly like Pedro!! the only difference was that he was blond (Not mention the personality, of course;D) I thought that I ask him if he like the turtle-soup, but there were too many people on the bus, and cannot reach him...XD
And finally: I think if Pedro doesn't have that stupid beard, he would looks more less like a monkey!
Re: Why does Pedro look like a monkey? Sorry to double post, but I have to add this: a couple of days ago my 21 month old niece was with me, and I was watching MCoG. She was drawn in because it's animated, and I quickly taught her to recognise which one Mendoza is
Anyway, when Pedro comes on the screen, little Katie stares at him, then points and says "Mon-key..."
