I do think that MCOG can be seen as having a metaphor with the Bible, i.e. Esteban is portrayed as being like the Christ Child, the Messiah in a way.
But this is not done in a "blasphemous" way - especially as he has been raised in Christianity, so I think this is also why he does not believe he can control the sun, as some people in the church would've taught him that only God can do that.
