The end of the world in 2012?

I am curious about the Mayan calander?
It is said in a book that I'm currently reading (The Mayan Prophecies) that the Mayan people predicted that 2012 is the year that the world will end?
Is this some mathematical riddle? There has got to be a reasonable explaination because the Mayas used 18 day calanders for each month, which is at least 20% less than our current months.
Back in the 16th Century, all the Spanish armies saw what the ancient people of the Mayas done to their people, that is cut hearts out of some people and sacrifice them to the gods. The Spanish thought they were satanics, that's why wars occured. Plus the fact that they (Mayan people) disrespected the Bible.

As 2012 is only 8 years away, the world will hold their breath (again) (just like the millenium bug)

I am an optimest and do not believe some 5000 year old legend about any apocolypse. What do you think?

I'm not very familiar with the Mayan beliefs but generally those cultures believed in cycles of time, the creation and destruction of worlds over and over again...I am talking about the Aztec belief more than the Mayan, for example, in the 16th century when the Spaniards came, according to the Aztec belief they were in the fifth world already. Maybe the idea is that one cycle ends in 2012 and another begins? I could be totally wrong of course, but anyway, I wouldn't worry too much emoticon

btw, the object of sacrificing humans, according to their belief, was to keep the world, they believed that the gods will destroy it if they won't give them human blood.

Right on. Yeah, they predict the end of the world in 2012 but according to the Mayan belief, the world had ended several times before. Ironically enough, their previous prediction coincided (to the DAY!) with when the Spanish arrived in South America and began decimating the people.

btw, the wars weren't started over the sacrifices, but over the gold. There's a great documentry over on http://www.supernova.org . You should do a search on that site for inca (I think).

Its been a while since I last read any Mayan history but if I remember correctly its all to do with the precession of the stars in the sky and the breaking of the bridge between the real world and the world of the gods, right?

Yeah, it'll be 20th of december, 2012.
So, we shouldn't buy Xmas presents, just go out and enjoy the last minutes of the World! emoticon
But, according to the ancient Egyptian calendar, the end of the World'll be ...about 2400-2500.(I forget the exact date)
So, there'll be two ends of the World within 500 years? Poor ol' World...
