George Hudson

Hello all,

Image

By now, most of you will have heard the sad news that George Hudson passed away in the early hours of Tuesday 11th August 2009.

George has been an ever present face in Running Forever since the early days and was a committee member also. He ran in Group 2 or 3 I believe (I'm too far down to know exactly!) but was always a keen supporter of slower or newer runners and I know I really valued him coming out with our beginners group last year.

George's son Steve also runs with the club and extended members of the Hudson family would often turn up at Pub quizzes to take part in the 'NFB' Team.

Outside of RFRC, George was a popular face in Bridgwater, being a member of a carnival club. He also campaigned for and raised lots of funds for the Musgrove Leukaemia Group.

A card was signed by many of the club offering thoughts and best wishes to George's wife and family at this sad time. Should people wish to send personal cards, it is suggested that they send them to the RFRC address and we will send them on.

George's funeral will take place on Friday 21st August 2009. The service will be held at St Mary's Church, Bridgwater (the big one in the middle of town) at 11.15am. That will be followed by a cremation at Taunton Crematorium at 1pm. RFRC members are invited to attend both services.

There will inevitably be many members there and I believe we have been asked to form a 'Guard of Honour' for George. Any RFRC members attending the funeral are requested to wear their club kit of vest, t-shirt and hoody, just like George always did.

George's family have requested family flowers only for the funeral and donations in aid of Musgrove Leukaemia Group. RFRC will be considering how best to personally remember and acknowledge George in due course.

In terms of the funeral, I am sure many people will attend and I suggest that many of you could arrange lift shares. Perhaps use this topic board to arrange such things, or simple to share memories of George.

Our best wishes and condolences go to Maureen (or Mrs George as I call her), Steve and the rest of George's family and friends at this time.

I was very sorry to hear about George. Even though I hadn't known him very long, I could see what special man he was. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he was very supportive to other people.

I shall miss him on our training runs telling me how big the next hill is going to be!

My very sincerest condolences to all his family.

I'm still very shocked to hear that George has passed away. He was always so happy and encouraging and he and his lovely smile will be so missed.
I know I'll often be thinking of him to help me through marathons in the future.
I think he'll still be running alongside many of us for a long time to come.
Thinking of all his family and friends at this sad time.

it is such a shame as he was such a top bloke and a great example. He's chilled, friendly and kind.
I'll see you at the funeral (so long as i can skive out of work - which shouldn't be a problem)

George was one of the most dependable guys I have ever had the privilege to meet always prepared to help out in whatever way he could be it for RFRC or the Musgrove Leukaemia group. I dont think i can ever remember George without a smile on his face, his humour was always there to brighten our days up, he will be missed by all that knew him.

My thoughts to the Hudsons, other family members and all those who have lost a very good friend.

It had been a pleasure knowing and running alongside George for the past two and a half years. He had an abundance of enthusiasm and had the ability to encourage and get the best out of others. I'll miss the keen sense of humour (and the sound of his feet hitting the ground as he runs past). As others have said, thoughts are with his family and friends. R.I.P.

I've just spoken with the Funeral Directors who have asked that all of those who wish to be part of the 'Guard of honour' at the crematorium be at the front entrance at 12.45. When the hearse is seen coming up the drive the guard will then need to formed in the passageway between the front door and the Chapel.

Please pass this on to anyone whom you know who wishes to form part of the guard.

Thanks Mike,

I've looked out my RFRC vest and t-shirt all ready.

As we're sharing our memories of George you may find this recent experience of mine poignant; I decided to contact Musgrove Leukemic Group (of which George was a key member, for those of you who don't know) to ask for a sponsorship form (I'm running a Marathon soon). They replied to my email very quickly but apologised in advance as there was likely to be a delay in getting the form out to me as the man who usually sent these things out had recently passed away. Obviously, it was George he was referring to and this brought home to me how big a part of other people's lives he played.

This is really an awful shock.

I haven't been in the club very long but George made me very welcome, and we had some great chats about his various marathons on our long runs. He was a really great bloke and my sympathies go out to his family.

I'm looking forward to seeing you wear your vest and t-shirt at the same time Martin!

For my part, George was one of the friendliest people I've known and the club will certainly be worse off without him. His enthusiasm on and off committee was a perfect example to us all.
