Tough Guy 2008:
Scott, Steve and Simon (aka moi) completed the Fiendish Tough Guy course on Sunday. We ran across blazing bales of hay, crawled through electric fencing and under barbed wire, waded through mud pits, swam in freezing cold water, crawled through claustrophobic sewage pipes and clambered across climbing frames and netting. Not only that, but we did it in our ‘Tough Guy’ muscle suits!
It's an amazing experience with around 5000 nutters around you there's a real camaraderie. It's no place for a pb (we took 2hrs 45mins to complete the 8 mile course)but it's great fun. The hardest part is trying to stay warm - in 2001 700 competitors got hypothermia - luckily for us it was a nice day on Sunday, although we were still shivering at the end.

Next year we're thinking of dragging TauntonRoadRunner out of the pub and getting him to do it with us!! emoticon emoticon

As Scotty said after Sunday's test, NOOO WAAAY! I might be stupid enough to do the Grizzly but not mad enough to even think about the Tough Guy.

To be fair to the three of them, all of whom are RFRC members, Simon was too modest to mention that they put a lot of time and effort into it and raised over £1000 for charity in the process! Well done guys.

Define 'enjoy' Val...
I got round and we had a few beers, so it was successful at least emoticon

I would recommend everyone do it once. Just so that they know my pain really!! emoticon

Definition of 'enjoy'? - not the Tough Guy?

Weetcher, I'll put this one on my list of races never to do. There's only 2 definates on the list at the moment - The Tough Guy and the Commando Challenge.

Btw - I don't need to know your pain thanks. If you did it in 2hrs 45, I'd probably still be running (?) now!

Re: Results 2008

The Blackmore Vale half marathon was held yesterday in windy, chilly conditions. Once again, thankfully the promised rain held off until on the way home. Rain with that wind would have been decidedly unpleasant! The range of descriptions of the course vary from 'described as fairly easy' (the race organisers - notice the cop-out 'described as') to hilly (Runners World forum) so to go for undulating would probably be fair. It couldn't have been that bad though because the course record was broken and several PB's were achieved by RFRC members. Results as follows:-

16 Rich Palmer 1:23:31
26 Nick Cutler 1:25:19
35 Alex Abrams 1:26:42 (PB by 7 mins!)
45 Jason Bowie 1:28:41
139 Matthew Bentley 1:40:11 (PB)
161 Scott Weetch 1:42:14 (PB by 9 mins!)
184 Mike Nicholls 1:43:49
326 Helen Phillips 1:54:49 (PB)

465 finished.

The men came third in the team race - well done guys.

It was Nick's final race in this country before he and Lisa head off to a new life in Australia but they will be continuing to represent us over there. Good luck to both of you.

Re: Results 2008

Well I'd call it bloody hilly!! The low point was running half a mile uphill into a force 8 gale then turning the corner only to discover another half a mile up another hill into another gale! Oh and plus the 200 metres up a 1 in 6 hill at the end. Given that the times are really impressive, especially Alex. 1.26 on that course with that wind is awesome. Don't get too much quicker though!!

Do I detect an air of concern about Alex's performance, Rich? emoticon Btw, I'm not going to argue with you about the undulations, cos I thought it was bloody hilly too!

Don't also forget Scotty's performance - down from 1:51 to 1:42. Not bad for a guy who, by his own admission, is not a natural runner, plays cricket during the summer and only runs during the winter.
