A Saint in The Brown Suit...
I caught a re-run of Agatha Christie’s ‘The Man in The Brown Suit’ today, which featured Simon Dutton and Edward Woodward.
Although there were a few rough edges, Dutton was smooth, suave and chivalrous, which all left me with one question – what went so horribly wrong with 1989 version of The saint?

Re: A Saint in The Brown Suit...
I sometimes think about Simon Dutton's role when I watch the saint with him in it,and wonder along the same lines, because the story lines were very good in my opinion, plus he is a half decent actor but it (just for some reason) didn't work.Buy I really hope that the hopefully new series will work,I go back to what I said in past posts and on my website about james bond, they took it back to its roots and I had a good feeling it would work and I think it did,so I hope they can do the same with the saint.

Re: A Saint in The Brown Suit...
Casino Royale is the biggest grossing Bond film ever, and Daniel Craig puts in a very good performance. I think it is a little like what was envisaged with Val Kilmer's Saint, in the way they have tried to show how James Bond became a Double O, and developed into the character we know and love.
There are a couple of things that throw it out of kilter with the rest of the canon, such as, Dame Judy Dench as ‘M’ and some dialogue about post Cold War terrorism, but, on the whole it’s very well done.
It goes to show that when the people at the top care about the project and the integrity of the characters, then anything is possible.

Re: A Saint in The Brown Suit...
What went wrong?
Oh gawd, where do I start...?
No script editor, so no one overseeing all of the scripts to ensure character continuity and well, common sense.
Numerous seperate productions meaning that they key active producers spent most of their time jetting around problem solving rather than taking the show forward.
Crap scripts. Simon has told me on more than one occasion--and I think Burl even recorded this is his book--that the Aussie epsidoe was being written as they filmed. John Goldsmith tells of how numerous key scenes were cut from one of his films because the local producers insisted on using a German actor who couldn't cope with the language.
I do think the Dutton series is a grand example of how not to make a TV show and I'm working on a long term detailed history of it.
And it's a shame, Simon's a great actor, made an okay Saint but could have been superb in the role if the production had been any good. And I still love the music.

Re: A Saint in The Brown Suit...
That’s quite a list, but a very honest appraisal. I really feel sorry for Simon, like Ian Ogilvy before him, he wasn’t given a chance to prove himself.
A detailed history of the show would make very interesting reading.
On the subject of the music, I know Pete Best, of crocodile Dundee fame, did the music for Fear in Fun Park, while Gunther Fischer was responsible for Wrong Number, and I think Serge Franklin did rest – but who wrote the title music, or was it different for each episode?

No, Serge Franklin also did the title music as well.

That was a little of topic, but thanks for clearing that up.

I think Simon did good in them and in Brown Suit. He is just so suave! You've met him Mr. Hoppy? Details!

Re: A Saint in The Brown Suit...
He made a presentation for The Saint Club at the peak of his Saintliness some erm, 17 years ago or so. Fortunately I was able to attend...

Re: A Saint in The Brown Suit...
Cool! Is he a nice guy? He was over here in the states in July doing a play, but I couldn't make it, makes me so mad that I could not go. Theatre goers had the chance to meet entire cast after each performance!
