The Saint Checks In
The actor, author and UNICEF ambassador, Roger Moore, shares his travel highs (Daily Mail – Travelmail, Saturday 02/05/09).
Where is your favourite travel destination?
Home. It is quite honestly my favourite place – either our winter retreat in Crans Montana, Switzerland, or our summer house in Monaco. My wife Kristina, and I travel much that it’s a treat to return to our own bed.
This year I have enjoyed two holidays, a week on the north island of the Seychelles and a working holiday, in Eilat, Israel where I attended a chamber music concert for UNICEF.
How would you describe it?
The north island of the Seychelles is the personification of luxury. You can’t get much further away from things. And Israel is so very beautiful; we spent some time in and around Eilat and Jerusalem. It was spectacular.
What would you recommend doing while there?
In the Seychelles, you must try snorkelling. Amazing! In Eilat I’d suggest the underwater aquarium.
In which country do you feel most at home?
Wherever I have my books and computer.
Where did you holiday as a child?
Up until the war, we always used to holiday in Cliftonville, Margate, where my Aunt Ada ran a boarding house. If it was a busy period and the rooms were booked, I had to sleep in the bath – it was usually empty and the taps didn’t drip so I didn’t mind.
Who would be your ideal travel companion?
My wife Kristina.
What do you never travel without?
A return ticket home.
Which country has most influenced your work with UNICEF?
My first field trip for UNICEF was in Central America – Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. It opened my eyes to some of the real problems in the world, and made me want to help via UNICEF.
Where is your next trip/project in your role as UNICEF ambassador?
Finland, Sweden and finally Lithuania. Next month we travel to Pernegg, Austria, with Julian Rachlin for a Chamber Music Festival raising funds for UNICEF.
Can you recommend a holiday read?
Apart from My Word Is My Bond, which I hear is rather good, I’d recommend Dear Fatty by Dawn French, Stieg Larsson’s trilogy and any book by Josephine Hart.
