Re: Capture the Saint
I found this book to be a very good read, with the plot centered on a character that first appeared in ‘The Saint in New York.’
It’s well crafted and moves at a good pace, with Burl capturing a very Charteris like
style; even managing to squeeze in two people closely associated with Charteris and Templar – mentioned as ‘Dan & Ian,’ as Charteris did with Monty Haydon.
I have read some criticism of Burl for his Americianisation of the character, but I think this is a little unfair when you consider that Leslie did exactly the same thing in the Forties; a theme that was continued with the radio series and The New York Herald-Tribune comic strip stories.
It’s a pity that this book wasn’t picked up by a major publisher willing to edge their bets, because I believe Burl had permission from the Charteris estate to write a total of five books.

Re: Capture the Saint
Given that I edited and pretty much published CTS I'm probably not doing myself any favors by saying that I agree with dear old Claude Eustace.
For my liking CTS is too American and lacks subtlety (is there a connection betwene the two?). But having said that it is damn good fun and an entertaining read, but the Saint has moved on from that now.

Re: Capture the Saint
I've not had the pleasure of reading this book, the one time I ran into it on Ebay the price was a wee bit too steep for my taste.
To bad though I'd love to read this one though.

Re: Capture the Saint
I got a kick out the American/subtle comments about CTS. Of course there is nothing subtle about The Saint in the early adventures. I was pleased that www.saint.org noticed that the book begins in the style Charteris used in the late fifties, early sixties - then the subsequent chapters work backwards stylistically (and sequentially) to the 1930's and back again. Bob Baker suggested a plot for THE SAINT IN LAS VEGAS - or at least the locale. I spent two years in Las Vegas, and it certainly isn't the Vegas of old. Now, I am in "Hollywood" and would love to write my next Saint novel and finish up a Saint short story that I blocked out a few years back -- one in the style of SAINT TO THE RESCUE. There is a saint story for which Paramount did pay me quite generously which, like the original SAINT IN PALM SPRINGS, will never see realization/publication. It involved a jewel heist in London and will no doubt languish forever in a vault somewhere.

Re: Capture the Saint
You see there's the basis of a great movie for the Saint. No more origin stories, because they take the mystic of the Saint away.
(not unlike Darth vader evil as hell and after the prequels he turns out to be a whining brat who deserves a good kicking)
i hope one day to find a decent copy of CtS and wouldn't mind seeing a new book about him.

Re: Capture the Saint
There have been several offers to make Capture the Saint into a Made for TV movie -- some of the proposed contracts contained clauses that would give them character rights, etc and/or series rights that were not available. There was one very sincere and reasonable offer from a producer who loves the Saint, but as TV series rights had been optioned by someone else, even though this would have been a stand-alone two hour tv movie, we (estate, etc) felt it may be a conflict. Perhaps CTS will be adapted eventually for the small screen.

Re: Capture the Saint
There are two editions of Capture the Saint...the original first edition (blue cover, 600 copies signed and numbered) and a Special Volvo Edition (white cover, 200 copies signed and numbered) We hope to have a third edition available in the near future.
