How did you first meet the Saint?
I know this has been done before, but I thought it would create a more homely atmosphere; so here goes...
I first became aware of The Saint in the guise of Roger Moore – watching repeats of the series during the school holidays in the early and mid-seventies; I was a little too young to remember them from their first screening.
A little later my parents told me about a new series of Saint adventures that were being made; and so when ‘Return of The Saint’ was shown on ITV, I was allowed to stay up on a Sunday night and watch Ian Ogilvy in action, and although I must admit to preferring Roger in the role of Templar, I still have a great affection for this series.
It was a surprise gift that reignited my interest in the character; Tony Mechele’s & **** Fiddy’s book, ‘The Saint – So you’re the famous Simon Templar!’
Since then I have managed to collect a paperback edition of every book, from ‘Meet the Tiger’ to ‘Capture the Saint,’ including the original French stories.
Aside from my collection of books, I really only have the Carlton & Umbrella DVD’s (having upgraded from the early ITC videos) and a couple of the Corgi Cars, one Volvo & Two Jaguars.
I look forward to any future return of “The Brighter Buccaneer,” to either the small screen or print.

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
I remember watching "Return of The Saint" back when I was eight years old. I knew nothing of The Saint's history, I just thought it was great fun and I loved his Jaguar.
I bought my first Saint book a couple of years later. I found "The Saint on Guard" at a jumble sale. I've got all the books now.
Now all I have to do is translate all my Saint video's into DVD's. Onwards and upwards...lol

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
While I had some notion that there was a "The Saint" TV series before this -- I have a vague memory from before this of the episode about the Loch Ness Monster -- I believe my first real meeting with Simon Templar came in 1972, when Roger Moore was named the new James Bond. As a great fan of Ian Fleming's novels, I was bitterly disappointed that I had read all of them, and there were no new literary Bond worlds to conquer.
When Moore was cast, I thought, Say, James Bond is now the fellow who played The Saint. So if I pick up a Saint book, I can just pretend he's James Bond, and it'll be like having a new Bond book!
What can I say, I was a child.
I no longer remember which book it was, but remember being at first disappointed, and then delighted, that the character I was reading about couldn't possibly be mistaken -- or substituted -- for James Bond.
From that moment, it was all inevitable.

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
As an 8 year old I spent far too long glued to the TV watching Ian Ogilvy dash around France, Italy and occasionally the UK.
Then I discovered that one of my brothers had some books about a guy called the Saint.
That was my undoing. Over 25 years later I have a house full of books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, cars, more books, ties, polo shirts, postcards, tie-pins, posters, calendars, even more books....all with the stick man logo on.
I'd swear it's not just down to me though, honest. You know how the Saint would never have to seek out adventure, it would always come looking for him? Well I just can't escape the Saint--I was in Paris a few weeks ago and bought some books to read whilst waiting for the Eurostar. Behind the cashier in the newsagent was the first part of a partwork devoted to "Le Saint"...See! I don't even have to look for him anymore--he finds me!!!
What's even funnier is that now my eldest son has started showing an interest, and whenever the youngest one sees a stickman he seems to think it's daddy...

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
Oh dear. This is a bit embarrassing. I can't remember how I first discovered the Saint or even the first book/short story I read. I can remember all of the details about reading Sherlock Holmes for the first time very vividly. Doyle's stories had a big impact on me. But details about how I first starting reading the Saint, no.
It probably had something to do with the Roger Moore Saint series. The b+w Saint episodes was broadcast daily in Melbourne, Australia where I lived for a couple of years in the mid 1970's. I managed to see most of them. The b+w series are still my favourite episodes. I found the colour episodes a bit repetitive scenery wise. Always the same studio backlot. There were though some notable colour episode exceptions. One being Vendetta for the Saint. Filmed on location in Sicily and featuring a terrific bout of fist fighting between Roger and a stuntman.
I think the first Saint book I bought back in the early 1980's, was a coronet paperback edition, The Saint bids diamonds. Which, I'm ashamed to say I still haven't read! In fact there are quite a few Saintly novels left for me to read. It's a different story regarding the short stories and novelettes. Of the (I think) 129 to choose from I've only got a few left to read. This is because I'm more of a short story reader.

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
I vaguely remember watching and enjoying the Return of, but without any knowledge of the history. But I also loved and preferred the Bond series so it was really Roger Moore's association with both that prompted me to pick up a copy of Vendetta for the Saint....which I thoroughly enjoyed. That was in 1988.
I then picked up all the other novels, novellas and novelettes, enjoyed all those until the ghost writing started, enjoyed the rest to a lesser degree, and thoroughly hating Capture the Saint.
Posters and lobbies were picked up, as were those for the French films, the French novel originals (is that a correct description?), and DVD replacements for the odd video released.
Have since then realised that the moving image renditions have got worse with every passing attempt from the RKO/Moore days but still remain optimistic that someone, somewhere, someday, will do justice to a thoroughly engaging character that does not need any updating and re-imagining.

Deviating off-topic slightly but I have to ask...what was it about Capture the Saint that makes you hate it so?

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
The details may be hazy as it was attempted some time ago to read the book but;
1. The Saint wearing a seatbelt.
2. The Saint whining about smokers
3. The connection to someone from Saint in New York which really did stretch the boundaries of time linkage - Charteris set the standard in his work to set later written adventures in earlier times unlike the filmic Bond who enjoys lie at 40 in perpetuity.
4. Boring boring boring.
5. Basically the Saint was absolutely nothing like what was described in the work of Charteris and I can only liken it to someone like Raymon Benson of Bond continuation fame who knows everything there is know about the subject, but that this does not necessarily infer the ability to create his own work.
And on it went in this vein until I gave up half way through. To this day it remains unfinished so I can honestly say I can never write the definitve review.
But anyone who has at the top of his website, Brilliant Author, deserves fast and furious criticism, and if the critique is critical, then one can surmise he's an idiot.
How this was ever allowed to be published by the estate is beyond belief.

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
Indeed I liken the character of the Saint in Barer's work to that of the whiney incompetent character of the Dutton series.
Although in the latter case I don't necessarily blame Dutton as there is more emphasis on team work there.
markvv - I wouldn't count not reading it as hole in your development.
