Re: How did you first meet the Saint?

You see Sime I've got this thing about wanting to read it all.

Having read the novilisation of the movie by Burl Barer, which was fun for the true fan with all the inside jokes, I wanted to read this book as weel.

I believe that at sometime I read the possibility was looked in to put the story online. So that all us sad collectors do get the chance to have a go at reading it.

As for the Dutton movies, from what I've remembered, I enjoyed the new adventures of the Saint together with my mum. Some of them were actually very decent. And far superiour to the Manhattan thingie which left me very dissapointed.

I find that the Saint still thrills me. I had not seen any of the b/w episodes but watching them was great fun. Also since I did remember the stories, and some of them would have been better if they'd not been changed.

8 or 9 years old i was when I found the first Saint novel (de Saints carnaval taking place in Rio)and still after almost thirty years the series thrill me. emoticon

Hmm, don't get me started on the novelisation!!

Whereas I am sure Charteris included the names of his friends, they were unknown to all except the author and friend.

When 'size 12 wearing' Barer gets in on the name dropping act, only confusion sets in as everyone but everyone has heard the names of all the Saint actors, Moore is a household name and since the only people reading that book were going to be Saint fans and not casual passers by, (unless he really did start to believe his own press and think he was a Brilliant Author), everyone would be thoroughly bored by his antics to impress a few fans and his beardy friends.

His involvement highlights the absolute worst of what happens when a fan gets involved with the continuance and creation of his interest - his loyalties are divided between telling a story, impressing of his knowledge and cheap laughs.

I haven't read his Complete History...... book so I don't know whether his critique is on the same vein. Suffice it to say I am not in a rush.

O well I did enjoy the novelisation for what it was.

But i do enjoy his Complete history of.... I am still thinking of buying the same sort of book on Bulldog Drummond (have seen it a few times pass by on Ebay). So I guess that there's a series of these books.

I have tried to get one of the others on Ebay, but not so much luck.

Like I said I have tried to get the Capture the Saint book on Ebay once but the price got a bit too steep. For that money I'd rather buy The Saint returns, the one HC lacking in my collection. (hey and that is not an Charteris either).

On the subject of continuation I am rather double minded, one side of me wouldn't mind the other side is slightly worried about the quality of the writing. With the James Bond continuation books the quality did fluctuate a wee bit. And there's now the adventures of a young Bond which is not something I want to read with the Saint. Which was one of my objections about the Kilmer movie.

Having admitted that I haven't read the very first Saint book that I bought way back in the late 1980's, I decided to make amends and read the book. Which I have just done. An excellent, fast moving story. It's interesting that the Saint not only uses brawn but also his brain in fighting the Ungodly. (Although the double crossing theories were starting to get confusing towards the end.)

One of my favourite passages from the novel has to be when the Saint is 'invited' to eat with Mr. Palermo and Aliston at a flat.

' "Must be crazy," [Aliston] said. "He hasn't got anything."
"Why should I have anything?" asked the Saint ingenuously. "I admit the place looks pretty insanitary, but I haven't been here very long." '

It's very evident throughout the story that the Saint doesn't have a lot of time for the Spanish people who inhabit Tenerife. The passage for example about the difficulty the Saint had buying a couple of tickets for a passage on a ship seems to ring true. Did Leslie Charteris have similiar problems when he visited the island?

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?

It was in late 1978 when "The Return of the Saint" first aired here in the UK. I had seen one episode and was just intrigued by this new cool looking detective man who drove a white Jaguar XJS, and what was the stick man figure about? I was only 7 then! I liked the few episodes I saw and then asked for the "Return of the Saint" annual 1979 when I saw it in the shops for Christmas '78, which my dad said I could have. I didn't get the Corgi 1/36 scale XJS till 1980 though until it had been out a while and was reduced in the toyshop! I've still got it but it's lost its ST1 plates since sadly.

My grandad and schoolfriends kept mentioining that the Saint had a Volvo before (I thought huh?, don't remember seeing that in the programme, although I remembered Ian Ogily driving a borrowed Volvo 144 saloon/sedan in one ep, and thought maybe it was his other car!!!). I asked my dad about this and he then said that there had been a Saint before Ian Ogilvy, and it starred the James Bond man - (Sir Roger).

I couldn't get my head round that until about a year later when I was at another school friends house and noticed amongst his toycars a Corgi Volvo P1800 in white with the same stick man on the bonnet and a dinner jacketed "Bond-like" driver. It started to make a bit more sense but it was years before I saw any RM ep's when they would occassionaly be repeated as one offs. I remember seeing the black and white one, with Dudley Sutton as a villian's henchman on a motorbike (playing a similar role to the one he played in "The Leatherboys"). You guys probably know it. The only B & W one I have seen.

Then in 1997 here in the UK, the later colour ep's were repeated on a Saturday afternoon terrestrial channel on BBC2. Which I enjoyed and noticed all three of "The Champions" did a separate episode!

I wasn't overly keen on the Val Kilmer film which I saw but it wasn't bad as an action flick.

I've never read any of the Charteris books, (never got round to it!) just don't have the time.

I've never known the background to the Saint much before, other than that he is a lonely figure but has a network of friends all over the world, and was a hard fearless but charming character. I've heard that he drove fictional cars; Hirondells and Fleurdillacs in the books, I wonder what they would have looked like!

I had caught one or two of the Timothy Dutton feature lengths on TV in 1989/90, but don't remember much other than he disguised himself with a fake moustache in one, and there was a car chase with his blue Jensen Interceptor - 1ST.

I know the old RKO films were shown on TV but never seen them, will look out for them.

I watched The Saint in the very early Eighties as I was too young for watching the program when the episode were aired on the Belgian and/or French television for the first time in the late Sixties.

I first met The Saint in 1977 when I was 4 the original series was re-run. I thought he was handsome charming and very very cool. I trusted Simon instantly and have not looked back since. I saw Return Of The Saint when I was 5 and loved it ah that Jag emoticon Ian was rather handsome as Simon Templar too he is my "Saint" but I still see Roger as the difinative Saint. I think Ian is the more handsome of the two emoticon I saw the black and white films too I loved them. I was not so keen on the mid 80's -90's Saint it was not my cup of tea at all. I'd love to read the books as I've never had the chance too. I haven't seen the 1997 film. I'd love to get a cd of the radio plays. I have the Jaguar XJS on my tv with Simon beside it.I would love to get hold of the Volvo but can't find it any where. I'm into anything and everything Saintly. May the sign of The Saint be ever present emoticon
