Hmm, there seems to be some censorship on my screen! ****'s name is asterisked out!
Anyway, Return of the Saint for me, I was only born in 1968. I loved the animated stickman and Ian Ogilvy was nearly as good. When I finally got to see Moore's episodes, I was relieved - he sounded a little like Ogilvy and had the same suave charm, and thank goodness was much more believable than the geriatric James Bond of his last two films...
I've got msot of the B&W episodes, but all the Charteris books (except the French ones) which I first saw as a kid in the local 2nd-hand shop, and was amazed to discover just how far back the Saint existed (they were the 1930s books - probably the best).
This forum looks like a great place, I have only just joined so lots of catching up to do!

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
The first time I became a saint fan was when I was about 7 years old I was walking home and pasted a tv shop one sunday night and the saint was showing on the tv in the window,in them days we never owned a tv so I use to stand there and watch it without sound through the glass window with my little brother,a little while after that I was put in a convent for children in mill hill east, north london called st vincents which is run by nuns, they had a signed picture of roger in the main room on a shelf above the fire place, and one day as I was staring at it one of the nuns asked me if I liked roger moore I said "yes and the saint".she told me roger was coming to the convent this coming weekend,I knew she was'nt lying because she was a lady of the church, anyway on the saturday we kids are waiting outside in the front gravel drive playing when this white volvo p1800 turns up and you should have seen the look on our faces when roger moore the saint got out with sweets and gifts and we just run around his car and the nuns kept telling us to keep the noise down and don't touch the car,the only let down was the reg plate on the car never said ST1,he stayed for about an hour and later I found out he only lived down the road in a place called debden or something like that.So in truth roger was a true saint even when he was working on the series and it never came as a surprise to me when he started working for UNICEF because he was helping children way back in the early 60's.

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
Jim,
What can I say… that is very moving – it shows your life long devotion to the Saint and Roger Moore.
But Jim, like Roger, you are always ready to help others that share your interest and give freely of your time to a cause that you hold so dearly. Your ‘Halo’ is well deserved.

Hi Frankymole,
A very warm welcome to you.
The runboard profanity filter strikes again!
You have an option in the control panel settings to turn it off. Go to ‘Change Miscellaneous Settings’ then scroll down to ‘Override Board Profanity Filter.’ Tick ‘always off’ and then ‘Save Settings’ and hay presto – the asterisks should be gone!
I hope you’ve enjoyed you visit and will drop-in again.

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
It seems I share the same route to "The Saint" as Mr Teal... My earliest memories are of weekday morning repeats in the London region during the school holidays. Not sure when this would have been, but it certainly pre-dated "Return of the Saint", which I recall seeing - and enjoying - on its original broadcast.

Yes, I will definitely drop in from time to time! Especially when I start rereading the books, adn watching all the Roger Moore B&W episodes I have awaiting me.
Halo, your story about Rog visiting the convent is very nice. I wonder if I could be allowed to repeat it or link to it on the Avengers board, the next time we discuss Roger Moore? There are fans of his there and sometimes they get a rough ride, but it would be nice to point out what a sterling chap Sir Roger is.
The Avengers board is at http://forum.theavengers.tv/ and is a pretty civilised place. It has a discussion area for "Detectives, Spies and Private Eyes" which sometimes mentions The Saint or The Persuaders. I would like to plug this board there, too!

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
Thanks, Halo! The next time the anti-Rog poster says we're "blazer wearing nebbishes" who worship someone he sees as valueless, I will remind him of Sir Roger's big heart!

Re: How did you first meet the Saint?
Hi Frankymole,
Many thanks for plugging this board on The Avengers TV forum. The Avengers board is very good, and covers a broad range of topics, so it's very worthwhile dropping by.
C.E.
P.S.
Although this is a little off topic, I really enjoy the black & white Diana Rigg episodes - Castle De'Ath being one of my favourites.
