Re: How did you first meet the Saint?

I first met the saint as a young child watching the original series with Roger Moore in the sixties. I discovered my father had a couple of the books and I read them avidly. Over the years I have read quite a few and always watch the re-runs when they come on.

I expect I'm in the extreme minority here, but I'm actually a Saint fan who dislikes Roger Moore intensely, and wants nothing to do with any of the TV series--my love is for the books and the George Sanders films.

I'm a fairly recent convert, in fact. It was January of 2005. As a fan of classic horror films, I tuned in to The Saint's Double Trouble on Turner Classic Movies to see the great Bela Lugosi--and instead found myself so captivated by George Sanders and his character that I barely noticed poor Bela!

A couple of judicious tape trades and Amazon purchases later, I had all of the Saint and Falcon films starring Sanders (not to mention The Saint in New York on a double-feature video). It wasn't long before I had dug up every Saint book the library had, and I was hooked for good by the end of the first one.

To date, largely through book trading and gifts from Saintly friends, I own twenty-five of the books. I would definitely like to have the entire collection someday. (If anyone is interested in helping a rabid young Saint fan feed her addiction, I'm very much open to book trades and purchases. Just bear in mind that I don't have much money to spare!)

I am also now the owner of a Saint community on LiveJournal, and a fanlisting for the books (both of which have unfortunately few members). To amuse one of said Saintly friends, I've even just completed a Saint fanfiction, which I will be posting online very soon.

Well I first knew the Saint several times over, without really knowing it...

As a child I remember my mother and I enjoying Ian Ogilvy's Return of the Saint and her telling me that there'd been an earlier series with James Bond in (I was barely 5 so it meant nothing to me at the time), then George Sanders appeared during school holidays in some great films about some fella called Simon Templar... I didn't make the connection... and then I found Roger Moore... ITC videos, reruns on Bravo - I couldn't get enough... but weren't there books? I wish I could remember now which was the first I got but I'll never forget spending what seemed like a year's wages (at the time, I only had a Saturday job) getting Burl Barer's amazing tome when it first came out (although mine NEVER had a dust jacket - should it have done?!) - the initial disappointment when I saw what my small fortune had bought me disappeared when I delved into its pages... and from there it has never stopped... oddly, I was often called The Saint at Secondary School and College although at the time my interest with our hero was just beginning... I'm still after a few of the books... they're SO hard to track down... and I'm always to be found with one of my books on me, to read whenever I get a moment's peace!!

Hello Endo,

A very warm welcome to you.

www.bookfinder.com and www.abebooks.com are the two best places to search for Saint titles.

...and to the best of my knowledge, the hardback edition of Burl’s book didn’t have a dust jacket.

The Val Kilmer film was my first viewing of The Saint. I enjoyed the film and Kilmers role. The film led to me also discovering The Saint series on VHS. I believe The Fiction Makers was my first episode that I saw of the series. Great stuff. I now have all of the Network sets of the Roger Moore series and also Ian Oglivy. It also led me to picking up on The Persuaders!

I'm finally getting to read some of the Leslie Charteris stories as well. I'm working on The Second Saint Omnibus right now. I also have picked up a few other books too. They are a challenge to find in used book stores, but I enjoy trying to find them.

I first met The Saint in 1959, when some of the older movies were on television of an afternoon (after school). The first one that I saw was The Saint in New York, followed by The Saint in Palm Springs. I must say that I was hooked. I read and re-read every book that the local library had. Soon after, I discovered The Saint Mystery Magazine, where I learned of The Saint Club (it took me 45 years to join the club) and the Roger Moore television series that was soon to be filmed. although I saw the Val Kilmer version on pay-per-view, I really didn't enjoy it as much as I did the older George Sanders films. emoticon

I met "the saint" when i was fourteen, when i first read "Meet the tiger" and "The last hero".
I suppose i only really became an admirer of Leslie Charteris's creation through Roger Moore. He introduced to me to "the saint" through his alter egos namely "James Bond" and "Brett Sinclair".
