Re: How did you first meet the Saint?

I believe Return of the Saint was repeated, in my region, on a Sunday afternoon. I was about five at the time of the original broadcast, but I am sure I don't recall it.

I really bought into the idea of an heroic adventurer, in exotic locations, charming beautiful women. However, it was the XJS that fascinated me at the time. I owned the cheap Corgi model replica, which I played with to destruction. Ironically enough, I probably took to the character of the Saint because Ian Ogilvy reminded of Roger Moore in James Bond, who I didn't know at the time was formerly most famous for playing Simon Templar in the original series.

I borrowed The Saint in New York from the library and I was immediately hooked with Charteris' writing too.

And so, exactly four months on from the last msg, may I add my twopenneth...

As far as I can remember, my first meeting with The Saint happened in the early-1970s by some re-runs of Roger Moore episodes I watched while at home with my folks in London. I was about seven or eight years old at the time, so couldn't really appreciate them in the way that I do now. It was the first run of The Persuaders! that introduced me to the work of Roger, and I loved (and still do) that series.
But if I were forced to pick one or the other, I'd go for The Saint. What was it that got me hooked? I'll take the easy option and say 'it was everything'!
When Ian Ogilvy's turn came along, I still thoroughly enjoyed his Saint adventures. I thought it was great casting - a dead ringer for a younger Moore.
For me, he comes a very close second to Moore. Followed by Dutton (so far, the only left-handed Saint?, then Sanders.

SIMON: You were hoping I was only half the man I used to be.

JED: Dry. You always were dry.

My mum was a big fan of the Roger series, and I remember watching them with her aged four or five on our black and white telly, and drawing a stick man on her copy of the Saint in New York (with the words 'hello - I'm Simon Temporer' in a speech bubble). She was none too pleased.

Then, aged five, I saw Roger again in The Persuaders and was hooked on that. The locations, the cars, the John Barry theme (I don't think it was the women back then)... it all just appealed somehow. When he became Bond I became an even bigger fan and watched any re-runs of The Saint to feed my action-adventure-cult TV habit.

My dad, who was a graphic designer reproducing pictures on magazines for IPC, came home in the late Seventies with a shot of an image he'd been working on. It was of a bloke who looked like a younger, hipper Roger Moore (wearing a light blue T-shirt with an 'r' emblem on it). He said it was a guy called Ian Ogilvy and that he was playing the lead in a remake of The Saint. That sort of did it for me. I loved the faded Cinzano glamour of ROTS and the fact that they shot the series on location, and in parts of Europe that I hadn't been to, but desperately wanted to see.

I was introduced to the Saint by my father, who had been introduced to the books when he was but a stripling, and had most of them in the Pan yellowjackets. I (being but a lad) was of course entranced by the dashing nature of our hero and the excitement of the plots; as I've aged I've fallen in love with the prose of Leslie Charteris, though I still adore the way Simon swashes his buckle.

That being the that (and observe the thatness of it if you doubt me), I've barely seen the various adaptations and have not felt my life significantly impoverished for it. I'm aware that this counts as heresy, however, and since the magical television-box seems to be showing bits of both The Saint and Return of The Saint at present I'll be remedying that deficiency in short order.
