Purefoy circles NBC drama series...
Reuters/Hollywood Reporter are running the following story:
Purefoy circles NBC drama series
By Nellie Andreeva
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - NBC is closing in on its "Philanthropist," with actor James Purefoy in negotiations to play the lead in the midseason drama series.
"Philanthropist" centres on a renegade billionaire who uses his wealth, connections and power to help people in need no matter the risks or costs.
NBC brass had courted Purefoy for some time, including flying the "Rome" star from the U.K. to Los Angeles for a meeting.
The casting of the lead comes nearly a year after NBC gave the project a 13-episode series order and three months after the network put it on its 2008-09 schedule.
Earlier this year, Purefoy was attached to "The Saint," an independently produced two-hour pilot based on the fictional detective; the project didn't go forward.
The last line maybe of interest to fans of the Saint – has Purefoy jumped ship because of the delays? Or has the project stalled?

While it is a shame that the Saint shall not return, he's overdue imho, the ideas with this pilot where annoying me a lot.
So perhaps it is not such a shame if the pilot has collapsed.

Re: Purefoy circles NBC drama series...
Saint.org has more information on this story.
Although I'd like to see the Saint return to the small screen, I can’t say I would be too disappointed if this proposed pilot has hit the buffers.
From the scarce plot details known about both projects, it seems that the premise for the new NBC series is more in keeping with the established television persona of Simon Templar than the plot for the Saint. It appears that prior to working on the new Saint pilot, both Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana were the original producers on ‘The Philanthropist.’
The world of TV production is a very strange place, and a place in which the strangest things can happen…
Watch for the sign of the Saint…

Re: Purefoy circles NBC drama series...
It would certainly have been nice to see the Saint Logo back on our screens, but the direction it was heading didn't seem like a winner to me. Reading that Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana were producers on the Philanthropist it seems a bit to me that they tried to shoehorn that premise into the Saint, but it doesnt really fit!
I guess i'll keep on reading the Saintly sites to see what twist happens next

Re: Purefoy circles NBC drama series...
So... all is not well with the proposed Barry Levinson Saint project? No chance of James Purefoy taking hold of the halo? Deflating news indeed. I, like thousands of other fans, eagerly awaited a new Simon Templar adventure.
Now, if an established household name can't be found to take on Templar, then how about an unknown? No other previous role to compare with his version of Templar, fresh-faced newcomer, British.
Where can I audition, please? As the last person on British terrestrial TV to play The Saint (albeit for approx five minutes, broadcast on 19 Aug 1998)I'd seriously love a shot at playing the character in a full-length episode!
So any casting firms out there... I'm available. And serious!
Saintly yours - thenameistemplar

Re: Purefoy circles NBC drama series...
Hi Hoppy
Ok. Ask and ye shall receive...
I was a collector of Roger Moore memorabilia (since 1979, first poster that started it all was Moonraker. From then til about 2004, I amassed so much that it had to be housed in its' own room. Channel 4's Collector's Lot series got wind of it and gave me a call, asking if they could feature it in a spy-themed special edition of the series. Laura Beaumont and a crew came round and spent the best part of a day filming it all and an interview. To introduce the segment, the director noticed some scripts (all unpublished) that I had written in my spare time, solely for my own amusement, and flicked through a few pages of 'The Superstitious Secretary'. he thought it'd be a fun idea to film a scene with Laura and myself. We found a restaurant in Fulham High Street, South West London, and set up camera. It was screened in black and white to give it that nostalgic feel and Laura played the 'damsel in distress' to my Roger-like interpretation of Templar, complete with raised eyebrow to camera!
The whole scene on screen must've ran for about four minutes, I think.
A thoroughly enjoyable time, I must say. And even had the halo appear over head.
I have other scripts for 'The Saint Takes Charge' plus two New Persuaders! episodes (with comments from Robert S Baker himself, a charming gentleman!)
Since that time, I have parted with a few items from the collection, but never from The Saint. That will never be separated. One of the gems is the Tony Michele & **** Fiddy book from 1989 (if memory serves. I have one copy of it signed by at least twenty Saint co-stars and another which has the first page signed by Roger Moore, Ian Ogilvy and Simon Dutton - all accompanied by stickman illustrations - plus director Roy Ward Baker.
If you need anymore info... don't hesitate to get in touch!

JED: Dry. You always were dry.

Re: Purefoy circles NBC drama series...
Having seen the first episode of "the Philanthropist" I must admit that with Purefoy we did lose a great Saint/Simon Templar. He looked brilliant and the 1st episode looked promising enough to make me watch a few more.
It is a shame about Purefoy though.
