Dougray Scott is the one
From Broadcast:
The Saint set to be resurrected by major Canadian producer
10 September, 2009 | By Kate McMahon
A Canadian production company is remaking iconic ITV thriller The Saint but has yet to approach UK broadcasters about the project.
Vancouver-based indie Brightlight Pictures has confirmed it is scheduled to film a pilot episode of the series later this autumn, and Welsh actor Dougray Scott is lined up to play Simon Templar.
Scott, who will soon star in ITV and RTE’s three-part thriller coproduction Father And Son, is in ongoing negotiations with Brightlight over the role but is thought to be close to an agreement.
Sony Pictures Television has secured distribution rights to the pilot and any forthcoming series outside of the US and Canada, and is understood to be planning to take the format to Mip next year to pitch it to UK broadcasters. An American broadcaster is yet to be formally attached to the project, but is expected to be revealed soon.
The Saint was one of ITV’s most famous drama franchises and while it does not hold the rights to the format, ITV Global Entertainment retains the rights to the original series.
Based on Leslie Charteris’ novels, Templar was a Robin Hood meets James Bond-style character who had a penchant for disguise and solved mysteries, while taking on his nemesis Inspector Teal.
NBC originally replayed ITC’s Roger Moore version in the 1960s with huge success, and CBS syndicated the series in the 1970s.
The most recent remake of the franchise was a 1997 film starring Val Kilmer.

Re: Dougray Scott is the one
Poor lad.
He was born Scottish but Broadcast have repatriated him.
And it's not a remake of the 60s series. It's an adaptation of the books!

Re: Dougray Scott is the one
I know, I ignored the Welsh howler; the other we're quite used to. Such sloppy journalism. One can't help but wonder if Dougray Scott's name was simply picked up off one of these Saint boards...

Re: Dougray Scott is the one
One person already responded to the article. and somehow his name sounds familiar.

It's not a remake of the 1960s show. It's an adaptation of the original books.
Dougray Scott is Scottish, not Welsh.
CBS syndicated Return of the Saint in the 1970s. Which was also an adaptation of the original books .
I am unhappy if he were really the choice, it is in my humble opinion a poor one and a kneefall for commercial interests that will most certainly not be served well.
Then again I have plenty boxsets to watch some decent Saint any day.

Re: Dougray Scott is the one
Mark,
Just give him a chance. I think you might be pleasantly surprised.
But who would you rather see cast as ST? Bearing in mind that for it to succeed it needs to find a home on American TV which means it has to be Contemporary and your leading man should be in his 40s.

Re: Dougray Scott is the one
I think most people will remember DS from Mission Impossible II which was an awful film! and he played a rather Dark Character. The more i think about it though, if done right the Halo may fit and at least not David Schwimmer!

Re: Dougray Scott is the one
My thoughts are it could be a lot worse - Remember, the last Saint was Val Kilmer!
I only recall Dougary Scott from Enigma; although very different to the Saint, he seems like a fair choice. So my reaction is one of relief considering some of names suggested else where.

Re: Dougray Scott is the one
Dear Hoppy
Rupert Penry Jones would have been my first choice
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0672303/
I consider an English actor not that well known in the US a bonus instead of going for a known quantity that is soso. DS never impressed me at all. And NO I don't watch desperate houswives for any reason.
Another actor well suited would have been Ioan Gruffudd when you consider well known

Re: Dougray Scott is the one
Penry-Jones was suggested but doesn't have enough of a profile in the USA. Personally I'm not convinced he could do the humor that's needed--all his characters seem so damned earnest.
Ioan Gruffudd was sadly deemed too young. But he could have been good.
