Review of Network Extras...

Having only just received my copy of Return of The Saint - The Complete Series, I haven’t had time to look at it in detail, so this is only a brief overview of the main extras on Network’s latest Saint release.

It’s obvious from the outset that the set has been put together with great thought and care… which leaves me with a small problem… where to start!

Provided in the case with Disc 7 is a forty-seven page booklet written by Ian ****erson, honorary secretary of the Saint Club, which includes a full episode guide, with cast and crew credits, and many other interesting notes about the series, it’s Star, the people working behind the camera, the locations, the music, the merchandise, and last, but not least, the car.

Ian also produced and directed ‘The Saint Steps in… to the 70s, a forty-five minute documentary about the making of the series, containing interviews with Ian Ogilvy, Bob Baker, Malcolm Christopher and John Goldsmith, while Sir Roger Moore provides the narration. There are some great moments, including Bob Baker reminiscing about Leslie Charteris’ close encounter with Oliver Reed.

Network have also included ‘The Saint at Elstree,’ a short film covering the unveiling of a plaque honouring Roger Moore’s work at Elstree studios; again directed and produced by Ian ****erson.

Having previously read a transcript of Roger’s speech, and heard it, via a link at his official web site, it was nice to finally see Sir Roger and Bob Baker in action - other comments being provided by Johnny Goodman, Bob Baker, and Sir Roger’s daughter Deborah. And… not forgetting Ian Ogilvy, once again picking up the narration duties.

The remaining extras include three image galleries (one with a music suite), commercial break bumpers, title sequence story board and previously unseen film rushes from the title sequence, and large number of PDF files, which can be accessed via a computer.

All in all this set should be regarded as a must have for serious Saint fans and the many others with a nostalgic hankering for 70s television programmes.

I’m not sure if Network are planning to release any further Saintly adventures; in this world of economic reality nothing is certain, but Sir Roger’s narration leaves a nice cliff hanger…

‘…Bob Baker thought the TV schedules were in need of a modern day Robin Hood, so teamed up with producer D.L. Taffner and that, as they say, is another story.’

All fans of the Saint can but hope.

Glad you enjoyed it Claude.

The booklet was actually edited down from my original work and there's several thousand words yet to see the light of day. Perhaps The Saint Club will do something with them, we'll see...

Like I said in my feb update,Ian has done all saint fans proud with the work he has put in to make this dvd set a must have set, even if you are a diehard roger moore fan.I think the extras speak for themselves and the booklet could sell on its own,so well done Ian for getting a great dvd set out to saint fans and for converting me to a return of the saint fan.miss this dvd set at your peril.

I bought mine straight away, and am now wondering if it's feasible to get the Umbrella set, as I've heard that it has a different set of commentaries to the Network set. All I need is money, or a letter to Santa Claus...
