Episode commentaries…

Dear Hoppy,

The Network DVDs have commentaries on four episodes:

The Village That Sold Its Soul
The Poppy Chain
Murder Cartel
Collision Course: The Brave Goose

My idle curiosity asks if there were any criteria for selecting these particular episodes.

Yes!

Oh I see...

Brave Goose because I was frustrated beyond belief that the Umbrella release did a commentary on this episode and completely neglected the walk-through by the man who created the character.

Murder Cartel and Village because we had John Goldsmith in.

And Poppy Chain because we were aiming to get Jenny Hanley in but she couldn't make it at the last minute.

Thanks Hoppy.

I've only listened to the one on Village so far. It’s a pity there isn’t one on Ian Ogilvy’s favourite episode, Duel in Venice.

I've heard that the Australian DVDs by Umbrella have a few commentaries but, with one exception, on different episodes to the Network set. And even with the episode that has commentaries on both sets (possibly Collision Coues part 1) the Umbrella commentary is different to the Network commentary; different participants. Can anyone say yay or nay as to this?

The Umbrella and Network commentaries are totally unrelated.

It’s sometime since I last listened to them, but if memory serves, the Umbrella one’s are all moderated by Jaz Wiseman, while Network’s are more relaxed – with the guests chatting freely on their trip down memory lane.

Both being equally enjoyable!

The Umbrella set has a commentary on Duel In Venice by Ian Ogilvy and Robert S. Baker.

As for Network doing the Brave Goose (part 1) again because we didn't mention Leslie Charteris' blink and you miss it appearance, seems a little over the top.

We deliberately didn't mention Charteris as he had nothing to do with the production of the series. OK he created the character of the Saint but that was it. The Saint on television (Roger Moore, Ian Ogilvy and Simon Dutton) is a million miles away from the character in the book and there are thousands of people who only know or got to know Simon Templar as a TV character as opposed to a literary figure.

I thought he had some input into the production of ROTS? On the Network documentary Ian Ogilvy talks about him as having the same function as he did on the Roger Moore series, which was to criticise the scripts. IIRC, he even agreed with Ogilvy that a script was poor, and said "Don't worry, I'll be the villain in this!"
