Should there have been a second season?
Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
Having now watched the whole series on DVD, I’m of the opinion that Ian did a very fine job. I know that Roger is seen by many as the definitive Saint, but Ian’s interpretation of Templar is equally good and very enjoyable to watch (overlooking some continuity and script issues, which can’t be blamed on the actor) - I think it’s a pity a second season was never commissioned, I would certainly have liked to have seen more of Ian’s Saint.

I could never understand why there wasn’t a second series; I think Ian was really good as the Saint.

Re: Should there have been a second season?
I can tell you why the series was cancelled... well, the rumors anyway.
Sir Lew Grade was at the centre of all three:
1. He didn't like the show
2. He took an early dislike to Ian Ogilvy
3. He'd sunk all of ITC's money into 'Raise the Titanic.'
The disastrous flop of Raise the Titanic ultimately cost Lew the control of ITC.
As a 10-year old boy, I would loved to have seen more installments of the Saint, but over the years my judgment had become clouded by reading the negative and blinkered reviews of the series.
We can't change history, but I wondered what fans of the Saint thought of the series and Ian's performance?

Re: Should there have been a second season?
I find it very disappointing there wasn't a second series, and remember feeling that same upset back in 1980, when it sunk in with me that the series wouldn't be returning. It didn't really make sense, as I recall it being quite popular at the time.
I wasn't aware of Sir Lew's dislike of the series, so that's interesting to hear. Obviously his wife didn't like it either, as he often bowed to her judgement (notably regarding bringing back the character of Jason King in his own series).
Best,
Alan

Re: Should there have been a second season?
There'll be more about a possible second season on one of the extras on the forthcoming Network box set

Re: Should there have been a second season?
Like Alan, I remember feeling disappointed that there would not be a second series. I had the Corgi car, and watched the show religiously. Raise the Titanic hurt so many fans, not just ourselves—I imagine Sapphire and Steel fans out there weren’t too happy, either. It was, perhaps, a sure sign the 1970s were over.

Re: Should there have been a second season?
It's a pity that there weren't any further series of Return of the Saint, as it's been pointed out that, like James Bond, Ian Ogilvy's Saint would have benefitted from another series. The first series would have established him as templar, and further series would have consolidated the role. I think it was mentioned in the documentary that Roger Moore needed a couple of films for the public to accept him; same principle for Ian Ogilvy.
It would have been interesting to see what changes might have been made for series two...

Re: Should there have been a second season?
It was one series. Though I think it may have been broken up for transmission in some territories for I've seen it referred to as to.
But it was produced and originally broadcast as one.
