Duel in Venice
This is the third episode on the Umbrella box, and this is immidiately one of my favorite episodes. It is an exciting tale which uses it's outdoor decor to the maximum effect. Rarely you get to see Venice used in such a nice way, which shows that the producers of this show made a correct choice in their approuch for the new series.
The other great pleasure for me was the actress Carole Andre who plays Claudia the gorgeous gondolier/guide who helps the Saint through the canals of Venice. She played the part of Marianne in a 12 episodes long miniseries(1976) by the name of Sandokan (played by Kabir Bedi, the evil henchmen in RM's Octopussy (the Bond conection) and also did a part in the the soap The Bold and Beautifull). She was one of the most beautifull ladies I'd ever seen, well I was a young lad but she did make a enormous impression condsidering that I immidiately recognized her.
The story:
A daughter of a friend, Sally, gets kidnapped by an old aquintance and mercenary Jed Blackett, who's got a score to settle with the Saint. He gives Simon a six hour deadline to find Sally and save her. Templar finds a drop dead gorgeous gondolier Claudia who does know her way around the Venician canals and has an large family and dubious friends as well. Simon gets to meet the local head of crime and annoys him, but gets his help and warning if he ever returns he dies. He gets him and the lady into all kinds of trouble but in the end he wins the day, In what Charteris must have liked rather Saintly way (from the old days when ST didn't mind killing the bad guy).
This episode shows a much tougher Saint than RM ever played, a Saint that is more like the one in the earlier exploits of the books.
Conclusion: Ever since I did discover the Saint in books, this is the closest episode that thrills me to no end. This episode is a classic in my opinion.

I'm with you 100%! Duel In Venice is one of, if not, the favourite episodes of mine from the Ian Ogilvy years.
And yes, Carole Andree is quite stunning throughout .
I was with my family in Venice in the late-1970s and when we returned to our hotel in Jesolo (about an hour and a half from Venice), we were told there was a big film crew shooting there. Annoyingly, I never saw one camera during the day! Even more annoying was that I never found out for sure if it was the RoTS team filming Duel In Venice or the Bond team filming Moonraker!
I holiday every year in Jesolo and always spend a couple of days in Venice. I only have a couple more locations to find and get on film! Unfortunately, there's no public access to the roof of the astrological clock tower, where the Moors strike the bell.
One last note: the first time I met Ian Ogilvy (at Richmond theatre during his performance in 'Snakes And Ladders' with Paul Nicholas), I got him to sign an original script for Duel In Venice and told him it was one of my favourite episodes. He said it was one of his, too.
Perfect pace, intelligent touches and the right level of humour. And Venice never looked better on screen.

Re: Duel in Venice
I remember reading an interview with Ian Ogilvy, in an issue of Photoplay. Ian was filming the last scenes for ‘Brave Goose’ at Pinewood in early 78 (the tanks there were used to film the diving sequences). I think all of the main location work for ROTS was completed in 1977.

Re: Duel in Venice
If that is the case, Mr Teal, then it's highly unlikely the film crew I heard had been in Venice when I was there, was not the RoTS team.
Many thanks for that. Appreciate it.
I'm off on holiday at the weekend. Yep... Venice again. So I'll be unable to read what's new on the forum. I shall tread carefully in ST's footsteps!
BTW... Have you noticed on the scene select screen of Umbrella's box set for the 'Duel in Venice' episode, there is the name of the staircase. And it certainly doesn't read what it's meant to - Bovolo!

Re: Duel in Venice
Oh, and Cathryn Harrison's character in the episode is Linda, not Sally.
This error is also listed on IMDB and TV.com I believe.
The episode does contain one of my favourite Saint put-downs, when Simon says to Jed: You know, I underestimated you Jed. I always thought you were a moron. You’re smarter than that, you’re just a cretin.
Priceless!
