According to Alice's daughter, She didn't just up and leave with Trevor, she went up on deck with the family and got into the boat with Bess in full knowledge of it.
from hearing this, and reading various newspaper articles i tend to believe her and i also firmly believe that Bess died because she refused to leave her husband, not because she couldnt find her baby.
