William Murdoch's family and the town of Dalbeattie.....
Here is where we will discuss how William's family dealt with the loss .. It hit his family hard as they were expecting him to come home. I mean after all he had spent more then 25 years at sea so what would be different now ? .. the fact that so many questions remained unanswered was devastating to them. They wanted to know what had happened and why it had to happen to begin with and they were just not getting the answers they were requiring. William's mother Jane Murdoch passed away in January of 1914..it is said that his deth was the finaly blow to her. as she was already very sick and she never recovered form his death.
Captain Murdoch was very upset as well he too passed away shortly after the disaster.
The town dedicated a plaque to him and they set up a prize fund in his honour as well. They are still defending him and of course upon hearing of his death the Murdoch family was immediately compfoted by the entire town. they held a special meeting for him and that is when they decided to honour him by placing a plaque on the towne hall wall to commemorate his life and death.
to them he is was and always will be a hero that night and every moment before in his life.
the same with ihis family.
His nephew Samuel Scott Murdoch is still today defending his uncle and passing down stories of him as told to him by aunts and friends of William's.

Re: William Murdoch's family and the town of Dalbeattie.....
I can imagine that it was a bitter blow to your family, and to the town of Dalbeattie. I mean, here steamship travel was supposed to be so safe and then a so-called "unsinkable ship goes down...
It must have been an especially bitter blow for your father. I know he loved you very much and was very proud of you.
I have seen the memorial plaque put up in Dalbeattie in your memory, OM. It is lovely and very touching.

If it is the one you put up on the Wm Murdoch thread, it is beautiful, OM--just beautiful!

Re: William Murdoch's family and the town of Dalbeattie.....
Greetings,
It is very touching. It is nice that they remember you like that. I wonder if anyone remembers me in Dumbarton. I kind of doubt it. Thanks for listening. TTYL, Laters.

Re: William Murdoch's family and the town of Dalbeattie.....
Greetings,
True, but don't know. I mean there is so little known about Robert and it doesn't even prove that he was born in genealogical records yet. Thanks for listening. TTYL, Laters.
