CH Lightoller Bio Pt I
Charles Herbert Lightoller was born in Chorley Lancashire on March 30, 1874. His mother died when he was 4 weeks old. His father moved to New Zealand about 1885. In February of 1888,, young Charles signed onto Primrose Hill, a large steel-hulled barque out of Liverpool.
On his second ship, Holt Hill, Charles, by then nicknamed Lights, experienced both a dismasting and being wrecked on St. Paul's Island, a rather godforsaken pile of Rock in the southern Indian ocean. Along with him, the crew was marooned approximately eight days until rescued by a passing ship.
After thiis, Lights returend to Primrose Hill and finished out his apprenticeship, taking his mates certificate exam at Calcutta, about 1897.
Between then and 1898, Lights worked on a number of ships, amongst them .Duke of Abercorn, Knight of St Michael (on which he experienced a shipboard fire), Knight Companion, and under the notorious Bully Waters, he served in Niagara and was nearly killed in a surboat accident (in fact, he was the sole survivor).
During the Yukon Gold Rush, Lights decided to decamp to the Yukon Territory in order to have a go at making his fortune. So off to the Yukon he went about 1989. However, the Gold Rush turned out to be something of a bust, so Lightoller headed east, working as a cowboy, riding the rails, working for a time in Montreal at a carnival as a carpenter, finally working his way back to Enlgand on a cattle boat, tending the cargo.
In 1900, Lights joined the White Star Line. In February of that year, he was assigned to Medic where he met William Murdoch, who was destined to become his best friend and shipmate and with whom he would ultimately serve on Titanic in 1912.
Whilst working aboard Suevic, he came upon a young lady struggling along a corridor. When he asked her if she had hurt herself, she said no and explained that she had been born that way. Lightoller promptly picked her up and carried her to where she wanted to go--and continued doing so for the rest of the voyage. That young lady turned out to be Sylvia Hawley-Wilson of Sydney whom Lightoller married on December 15th, 1903.
In the nearly 50 years which were to follow, they had five children: Roger (born 1906), Trevor (born 1908), Mavis (born 1913), Doreen (born 1915, and Brian, (born 1918).

Re: officer lightoller
Greetings,
Good start, if you need me to correct the spelling errors, I will. I mean I just dislike spelling errors as my screen reader reads them as is and sometimes have to guess at what is being said. I offer my services to anyone that needs a spell checker. lol. Thanks for listening. TTYL, Laters.
