Re: how many children did .. I see your point...I have never quite got where the calling people by the middle name got started but apparently a lot of people did it back then...

Re: how many children did .. At the turn of the century - to about WWII - it wasn't uncommon for several children in one family to have the same first name, so using your middle name was more common. Just look at my great-grandmother and her sisters (all born between 1890 and 1905)... they were all named Mary: Mary Alice, Mary Honoria, Mary Adelaide, and Mary Julia. It could get confusing... though I bet it was easy on their mother... just had to scream "Mary!" to get them.
