The Lusitania

Ok Wills Here is one of many I hope to submit.
I am now adding this piece on the wreck of The Lusitania, despite the historical importance of the ship, the mystery surrounding her loss, and the relatively shallow depth of 90 m at which the wreck lies, Lusitania has been visited very frequently over the years. In mid 1935 the ship was located using an early form of echo sounding, and later that same year a diver reached the wreck for the first time. becoming the first person to see the ship in twenty years.
Lusitania then lay silent for nearly three decades. In the early 1960's an American diver, John Light, bought the wreck from the British Goverment and began a series of diving operations in an effort to determine what caused her to sink. His team made over a hundred dives to the ship, but in the late 1960's , because of the limitaions of diving technology at the time, operations at the wreck site ended before he was able to make positive conclusions.
In Autumn 1982 a consortium headed by Oceaneering International spent over a month at the wreck, and the first known salvage work was done.Among the artefacts recovered were one of the ships whistle's, a docking telegraph, three propellers, port holes, windows, dinning plates and utensiles, and many other smaller items, including several hundred military fuses, proving beyond doubt that the ship had been carrying illegal munitions. Although Oceaneering claims that the vessel was lost through the detonation of munitions, the company declines to make its documentation public, preventing independant analysis.
Over a decade later, in August 1993, the next expedition was mounted. The leader was Dr Robert Ballard, the scientist who had located the wrecks of Titanic and Bismark. This expedition disproved most of the conclusions reached by the Oceaneering team and gave the world its first good lookat the ship in nearly eighty years. despite the thousands of still photographs and over sixty hours of video brought back by Ballard, nothing conclusive was found that could pinpoint the reason she sank. It is a fact doubtful that further examination of the wreck will shed any new light on why she foundered, not only because the wreck lies on her starboard side ( Where the torpedo damage is ) but because of the wrecks advance state of decay. In the eighty years since her loss, tides and currents have taken their toll, and except for the hull, little of the ship is left that is easily reconizeable.
The future of the wreck at present is uncertain. Late in 1994 a court battle began over ownership of Lusitania. In March 1995 after several months of hearings, the United States Distric Court inNorfolk Virginia, awarded ownership of the wreck to a New Mexico businessman, who claims to have bought John Light's title to Lusitania.Only the ship and appurtenances were included in the court's award; personel effects of passengers and crew as well as cargo were not.
This American court decission is not reconized by the Irish Government because the ship lies in Irish territorial waters. To prohibit futhere tampering with the wreck the Irish Minister of Arts and Culture placed an Underwater Heritage Order on the ship, which prhibits diving to or recovering artefacts from Lusitania without sanction of the Irish Authorities,.

That is just a short bit on research I have done on this great ship, but for those interested below is listed some more reading on this fine ship,

hi John,
thanks for posting that it is very intriguing to read this. I had a few ideas..

especially the part about the military fuses.. wouldn't it be sad if Lucy's own people sank her with those aminitoins to get america involved? or whatever country it was they were wanting anyway. but for some reason the blasts went astray.. and did not work like the people had expected..

hmmm ..yess will is definately gonna have to ponder this one..

Hey Guys...

Last night on the Discovery Channel, they aired the film--Sinking of the Lusitania: Terror at Sea...which tells the story behind how she was attacked and sunk by a German torpedo just off the Queenstown (Cobh), Irish coast.

They also showed the London Inquiry exterior courthouse...as well as the set resembling its interior. My first thoughts of course, were about what Will & Ada saw as they climbed the steps to the just mentioned courthouse, for the Olympic-Hawke inquiry. It was as if I was seeing things through their eyes.
