RMS Olympic
In yesterday's snail mail, I received my THS' The TITANIC COMMUTATOR Volume 30 - Number 175 - 2006 issue. In it, it features an excellent and most informative story and photos of Olympic, that's titled "Trooping in the First World War", by David R. Gray. Mr. Gray is an independent researcher from Ottawa, Ontario, specializing in Arctic biology and history. It's from the Canadian Military History, Vol. 11, No. 1, 2002, he shares his story.
For which Halifax, Nova Scotia, became one of her ports au call for carrying WWI troops to and from (Halifax to Liverpool) war theatre over in Europe...for which she docks at No. 2 Pier Halifax. It's also where she gets her "Old Reliable" nickname from the Canadian troops. And yes, with her wartime Captain, Sir Bertram Hayes at her helm.
Olympic was also known as H.M. Transport (HMT) during the World War.

Re: RMS Olympic
Aye thanks MA for the information. I always had a great deal of respect ofr Captain Hayes as he was a great Captain indeed so it does not surprise me that he would end up with the Olympic.

Re: RMS Olympic
I too, am a fan of Captain Sir Bertram Hayes too. Between he and ole' E.J. Smith...me thinks that the former made the better commander for Olympic - both before, during, and after WWI.
How I wish that you would have remained with this great liner, instead of going over to her sister ship, Titanic. Perhaps, you would've been elevated to the Chief Officer rank, to serve onboard "Old Reliable"...as well as being alive to tell your story to boot.
Then Ada wouldn't have been made a widow so early into your marriage.

I just feel that if you had stuck with Olympic, instead of signing on for Titanic...together with Captain Hayes, the two of you would have made an ideal team when it comes to the former steamer's many successful crossings.
Plus, being thrust into all that excitement of WWI at sea...you would've relished all that exciting seatime adventure. Especially that part where Olympic sinks a German U-Boat. Wouldn't you?

Re: RMS Olympic
Greetings,
I agree about Olympic being a great ship. Anyways, I hope that everyone is doing well today. Thanks for listening. TTYL, Laters.

Re: RMS Olympic
She most certainly was a great ship...a ship that didn't need to be scraped, but to be preserved as a floating museum/hotel, just like Queen Mary was.
QM now receives countless of visitors every day. Olympic would have too, including me back in the early 1980s, when I visited Great Britain.
Will, just for you, I fully intend to share with you that TITANIC Commutator article "Olympic--Trooping in the First World War", by David R. Gray, under this forum. Okay?
