I actually like the 9/11 tie-in, replacing Arab extremists with Jewish extremists. It could be a very good way to explore social and political issues, and when (if ever) certain acts might be justifiable. It could make a very powerful commentary -- if you want to go down that route. It would be a tough story to handle well, I think. And of course you would annoy the hell out of a lot of people (exactly which people would depend on the stance you take).

If you don't want to go down that route, I agree with Julia that it would be best to avoid the date altogether, as it's still pretty sensitive (though I'm saying that from the other side of the world -- I can't really relate to what it's like over on your side).

You don't need the actual date to make the connection.
The broadest touch would be Jewish terrorists, but there could be others. What is the status of the USSR? the French Resistance? American militia (Tim McVey comes to mind)?
