My crazy NaNoWriMo idea
I think I'm going to use generators (like the ones at Seventh Sanctum) to come up with plotlines, character names, place names, spells, phenomena, whatever, for my NaNoWriMo project this year. I was going to post this as a dare in the NNWM forums (I may still do that) but the more I think about the idea the more it sounds like fun, fun, fun! Which I'm going to be ready for by the time I finish this draft I'm working on.
It will be completely for fun and I should never get stuck, right? RIGHT?

Sounds like an interesting idea, Sherry. In theory, you shouldn't get stuck. I'd be interested to read about your progress with this idea.

Re: My crazy NaNoWriMo idea
Wow, neat idea. I wonder if it's possible? I imagine that you would find the random element an obstacle rather than an aid.
I hope you'll give us a post-mortem afterwards (I'm sure you'll be too busy for a running commentary as you go ).

Re: My crazy NaNoWriMo idea
In what way do you think it's cheating? I'm baffled. I still have to write the 50k words myself!
Sherry
Edited to add: Unless you misunderstand what I mean to do. I'm just setting a rule about where I have to get my ideas/names/etc. For example, here's what I have so far:
Story idea: The story is about a thief. It starts on our world after a disaster brought about the return of magic. The effect of magical races on business is a major part of the story.
Names: Glaive Timesi, Anna Darcko
It's common for folks to use generators for plots or names or ships, etc. I'm just going to use them for all of those things. And David could be right. It could actually be harder.

Re: My crazy NaNoWriMo idea
That part about have the generator come up with the idea, thats cheating.
Everything else is fine, if not nessisarily imaginative.

Re: My crazy NaNoWriMo idea
Hmmm...still not really sure where you're coming from here with the notion of "cheating." There's no way to really "cheat" at NaNoWriMo unless you use a file that you haven't actually written. And then you're only cheating yourself in any case.
I don't think there's anywhere you can get a story idea for anything that's "cheating" either--unless of course you plagiarize it.
But then you can't really plagiarize an "idea", either, since every writer will write a completely different story from the same idea...nope, I'm pretty sure I'm in the clear.

Re: My crazy NaNoWriMo idea
...it's turning out to be more of a challenge than I thought. A very interesting one, though. Taking all this raw material from an outside source and trying to weave it all together into something that makes sense. Much more difficult than simply coming up with everything oneself.
Who knows? I may just scrap it all and start fresh on Nov. 1st...

It certainly is a challenge. Good luck, Sherry!

Re: My crazy NaNoWriMo idea
The few excerpts (not found on this board, by the way) that I've read, Sherry, have been excellent.
The story sounds so different to what I've seen you write before. Do you feel this way? Is this story making you write "outside the box"?
