Remember I'm an amateur photographer... My camera is only a Olympis C-740 Ultra Zoom. It's already 4 years old, and it's impossible to find additional memory chips for it. It won't accept a chip higher than 512M, and even camera stores don't sell chips (M+ format) of less than 2G.

But in general I like my camera. Most of the settings CAN be dialed in quickly. And I love the fact that mine is a 10X optical zoom. Most of the cameras I looked at in this price range, you were lucky to get up to 4X optical zoom. With the digital software, I can zoom to 30X.

I even had a mini 6 inch tripod, but seem to have lost that somewhere... emoticon

I'll photograph any interesting bug, if he'll sit still and pose long enough... emoticon

I like to dabble in photography, too, although mostly I'm trying to capture images that I'd like to draw later.

I think that in many cases the type of camera doesn't matter as much as having a good eye for picture possibilities. emoticon

You'd be amazed at how many of the bells and whistles on my camera that I don't use. A super high end camera isn't necessary. It is still nice to have a few of those features, like the long zoom you mentioned.

I haven't had any snow here but we did have ice. It's amazing how things look with a coating of ice especially when the sun shines on them. The plants in my gardens looked very lovely. I took some photos but haven't decided if I want to post any of them. There will definitely be new bird photos though. I've started posting some of them on my board already.
