Is "supernatural" still fantasy?
I have a short story idea that is rather more "shamanic" and spiritual than dealing with magic and knights in shining armour. If asked, I'd call it Speculative Fiction.
Could I still market this as fantasy?

Without knowing more detail, I would say probably so. "Fantasy" casts a pretty wide net these days.

Re: Is "supernatural" still fantasy?
Ok, here's some more on "Sequoia".
It's a story about a person who falls through a tree into another world. Or rather, it's our world, but a different time and place.
There, he/she has a job to do. (No, I still don't know the gender of my MC. Annoying, but I might turn it into a story point.) This job is a spiritual kind of job. The person is asked to create a spirit / animal, because the people there feel the world is lacking it. The person has to learn what the others mean, but finally he/she goes ahead and envisions a new animal (still not sure which kind of animal). He/she isn't sure, and I think there's going to be some joking part in this.
Going back home through the tree after the job is done, this person is stunned to find "his/her" animal has become a firm part of the world and he/she is the only one who remembers it wasn't always so. Only then he/she realizes what stunning risk he/she has taken.
So. Is this still fantasy?

Definitely sound like fantasy to me--and fascinating! Hurry up and write it, Firle, I want to read it.
I can't wait to find out what the animal is like.

Heh, I feel much the same. I'm torn between a tradition fantasy animal (dragon, d'oh) or something completely strange and slightly silly.
I hope to finish it by end of October.

Re: Is "supernatural" still fantasy?
You could make it something mundane like a horse - that would work well, too. All the readers would obviously 'remember' the horse has always been part of our world.

Re: Is "supernatural" still fantasy?
I think that after several editing passes and some vacillating, the story is finally presentable.
So... if any of you want to read it and give me your opinions, send me a pm with your email address.

Ugh.
Found a major plot hole. I need a time-out for some fast reconstruction work.

Firle, when you fix the plot hole (or if you want a second opinion on the hole itself) I will read it. Let me know when you're ready.
