Worldbuilding


If worldbuilding is taken too far, does it rob the reader of the chance to "participate" in the book by using his or her imagination to fill in some of the details?

And how far is too far?

That's a good question. I like to imagine the surroundings that are 'around me' in the story. Personally, I like it when there is enough so that I can see and understand the world around me, but not so much detail that I want to pull my hair out. Example: I LOVED the Lord of The Rings novels, but did we really need page after page of description? That's just what I think, anyway.
