Re: Trekkies to the rescue
Wow! Brent Spiner is certainly one of my favourite actors! Too cool you know him!

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
Hey Nanc! I'm going to stick my neck out here and list my most favorite to least favorite captain (although I did enjoy them all):
Picard (by a long shot)
Janeway
Sisco ties with Archer
Kirk
Other popular Trekkie debates:
Which series had the coolest doctor?
(By some Trekkies, including my husband) Who is hotter looking 7of9 or T'Pol (Sp?)
What would have been a better way to end the tragic ending for the Dax/Worf romance?
Which species that attacked the Federation was the most terrifying/toughest?
Which two species would make the most unlikely friends? (My guess would be Klingon and Ferengi)
And on and on...
We Trekkies have a lot of things to discuss.

What would have been a better way to end the tragic ending for the Dax/Worf romance? By not killing off Jadzia. She should have stuck out for the last season.
Which species that attacked the Federation was the most terrifying/toughest? This is a tough one. I would think it would be a toss up between the Borg and the Dominion, though the single toughest individual entity would have been the Crystaline Entity.
Which two species would make the most unlikely friends? (My guess would be Klingon and Ferengi) I would say the Romulans and the Cardassians.

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
Thanks Jule! Those are excellent topics for my characters. I just wish I knew what the hell you were talking about !
Here's more questions for you all...
I want my gang to go to a convention.
1) where would one be held in Halifax? Would it need to be a huge venue or a smaller one... say a meeting room at a hotel?
2) do some people really dress up as their favorite characters?
3) who might be likely to show up at one of these? (the novel is present day) please give me a reference as to which series they'd be from.
4) if Kirk showed up at one would he be a) an attraction b) a freakish oddity c) an outcast d) depends on your age and who you thought was the best Captain e) none of the above: please fill in the blank __________________________ !
5) what are some of the things people do at the conventions?
Role playing games?
Listening to experts talk on specific Star Trek topics? what might they be? ie, do people draw profound meanings and find relevance for their own lives from Star Trek? Like what?
Shopping? what kinds of things do people buy?
Watching old episodes?
Eating?
anything you can tell me to give me a feel for it would be so appreciated.
thanks,
~nanc

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
The only thing I could answer to is #2. People do dress up for the conventions. I went to a Trek convention in Seattle in '93 where there were some very well dressed local Klingons.
More recently, I went to a Farscape Con here in Chicago where the convention goers were very creative (and realistic) with their costumes. There were a lot of 'Aeryn Sun' look alikes walking around.

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
Well, the SF convention I attended in Halifax a couple of years was at the Ramada in Dartmouth. It wasn't just Star Trek, it was the Maritime Science Fiction Convention. I might even have some brochures around from it. It's defunct now, so you could certainly use it in the novel without stepping on toes, I'd think. I've also been to GenCon in Wisconsin, which is more properly a gaming convention but since there are Star Trek RPG's, there was lots of Star Trek stuff there, too.
quote: 2) do some people really dress up as their favorite characters?
They sure do. There's usually a costume contest. Not everyone, of course, but it's nothing to be walking down the hallway behind a Klingon.
quote: 3) who might be likely to show up at one of these? (the novel is present day) please give me a reference as to which series they'd be from.
Probably anyone the organizers could afford to bring in. That's where I met Majel Barrett (Gene Roddenberry's widow, the voice of all Star Trek computers--except maybe on Enterprise, not sure about that--and Deanna Troi's mother on ST:TNG). The bigger names are probably harder to get, but it depends on your cash resources.
quote: 4) if Kirk showed up at one would he be a) an attraction b) a freakish oddity c) an outcast d) depends on your age and who you thought was the best Captain e) none of the above: please fill in the blank __________________________ !
I'd say a combination of d) and a) but mostly a).

Yes, all of the above, although as I said my experience is with general SF conventions. If you want to get together and discuss the whole convention, it would probably be easier. Love to do it, anytime! I'll come to your place and we'll eat Gak and drink tea, Earl Grey, hot.
Sherry
P.S. Jule should come, too.

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
Sure, I'd love to. Nothing better than talking Trekkie.
But, um, I'll pass on the Gak, and take you up on the Earl Grey tea. (Or even some Romulan ale, if it's a weekend night!)
By the way, it says something truly nerdy about me that I find Michael Dorn sexier as a Klingon than in real life, and Brent Spiner sexier as an Android than in real life.

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
Nothing like a robot to turn Jule on!
As far as the Earl Gray date... it's On! How fun! We just have to find the time. Sherry, you bring the Gak. My contribution (other than the tea): I'll get Barry to come down and tell Brent stories.
I didn't know that about Gene Roddenberry's widow. Surely she must have been in the first series as well....
Thanks for all the great info, gang!

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
I've never been to a Star Trek (or any kind of SF convention, and never felt any desire to. So the only question I can answer is:
quote: 4) if Kirk showed up at one would he be a) an attraction b) a freakish oddity c) an outcast d) depends on your age and who you thought was the best Captain e) none of the above: please fill in the blank
e) the only thing that might make me go to a Star Trek convention
