I didn't know that about Gene Roddenberry's widow. Surely she must have been in the first series as well....
She played Nurse Christine Chapel in the original series. I believe that was before she married Roddenberry (but I'm not sure).

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
May I use the opportunity to ask a Star Trek trivia question?
Is there a special name for the prostitutes of Risa? I tried google, but it didn't help me.
(I ask because a friend of mine used the German equivalent in the title of her latest Star Trek novel, and I'd like to give the correct equivalent in English. So far it would be "Sellers on Risa", but it doesn't have quite the ring as the German title.)

This is a prime example of TNG's failing. The technology just wasn't thought through.
When I start an application on my computer it knows exactly how to congigure it, because it knows I always use it in the same way. It remembers my preferences.
Why can't Picard say "Tea" and have the super-intelligent Enterprise computer know he never has anything but hot earl grey?
You can bet that he if he had a cute yoeman with a short skirt, he would have pretty quickly trained her that he always has hot earl grey.
That's why Kirk was the better captain
Or, more seriously, the yoeman vs. computer thing is a metaphor for why the original was the better series... it valued humans above technology.
O-K, David...that makes sense to me AND it's a great point for discussion. GO!----> people who know enough about this to discuss.
I didn't even know that the Earl Grey was a reference to TNG. I thought it was Sherry tactfully telling me that I hadn't served her favorite tea the last time she came over. (yes, I DO have Earl Grey on hand.)
What a geek I am. Or, is there a name for a non-trekkie who isn't in the know? Like a Muggle but not. A Truggle? Hey, that's getting awfully close to those soft, furry ball-like aliens that invaded in ST-TOS (is that the correct abbreviation? I'm learning...). What were they called? Not truffles. The Trouble with Tribets? Trivets? I know. Stop laughing at me. This is like the ABC's of Star Trek, isn't it?
That's okay. I was there when Star Trek started. I'm the only one here so far who can say that. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the point in my re-write (soon, I hope) when my characters launch into *heheh* an esoteric ST discussion and I have all the info I need right at my fingertips!

Tribbles.
Well, I might be inclined to agree with David about the tea IF it were a known fact that Picard and everyone else on the entire Enterprise drank their tea one way and one way only, forever and ever, amen. I know we only SEE him drinking his tea Earl Grey and hot, however if I were on the Enterprise I'd sometimes like mine Green, decaffeinated, and lukewarm; or Chai, black. Or many other combinations. So I merely assume that in Picard's many and varied tea adventures, Earl Grey is only one possibility. It may be his favorite, but not necessarily his only choice. Remember, he doesn't have to specify milk, sugar, honey, lemon, etc., so the computer presumably does have those preferences "on file."
Honestly, I never even thought about it before David's post.

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
Trivets? Tribets?
Hee hee! Sorry, Nanc.
Firle, the question about Risa was interesting.
I only ever remember hearing them suggestively referred to as "the women of Risa", with a wink, wink, nod, nod. They may have had an official title - but I just don't remember ever hearing it.
Also, I guess I may have had the wrong impression, but I didn't think they were actually "prostitutes" per say, but that Risa simply promoted itself as a "Pleasure Planet" and that all of its inhabitants were very, uh, accomodating, in whatever way you take your pleasures.
Is it not part of the Federation? So, there's no actual currency changing hands, right? Or am I wrong. I feel this is a weak point in my Star Trek studies and I require tutoring and assistance people, don't leave a fellow Trekkie floundering now! Before you know it I'll be calling Tribbles "Trivets". Hee hee.

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
I know this is a late post, but I thought I'd suggest watching the 'Trekkies' and 'Trekkies 2' documovies, just to get a feel for the fans. I'm not a Trekkie myself, but I have watched bits and pieces of all the series, and I have friends who I would class as Trekkies (or Trekkers, whatever you prefer).
Apart from being slightly disturbing in places, the documovies are highly entertaining. These are a group of people that sometimes you can't help but laugh at.

Re: Trekkies to the rescue
It's also worth trying to find a clip from (I think) Saturday Night Live, featuring William Shatner playing himself at a Star Trek convention, where after a number of incredibly geeky questions from the "fans" he screams at them Get a Life!!!!
