What's In YOUR CD Player?
When I'm writing, I like to listen to music. Sometimes, I'll find inspiration in the songs and in certain artists.
When I wrote Ascension, I was listening to Stevie Nicks, Metallica and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.
As I'm writing Avenging Angel, I've found that I get the most inspiration from KMFDM, Rob Zombie, The Passion Of The Christ insturmental soundtrack, Shakira and Terminator X (Terminator X & The Valley Of The Jeep Beats).
I listen to the music if I need to set a scene. For example, I had a problem writing Chapter 2 Scene 4, which was a scene that took place in a nightclub. I couldn't really write the scene at first because I didn't have a feel for it until I started listening to the KMFDM song 'Sister Salvation' The song carried me through the scene and I name the band playing in the nightclub 'Sister Salvation' in tribute to the song.
So, what's your musical inspirations?

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
If I'm working on a first draft, it's got to be either silence or instrumental--usually George Winston or meditation-type pieces. If I'm writing science fiction I have a couple other favorites; Babylon 5 Soundtrack, Star Trek scores, sometimes Holst's The Planets. If I'm editing, it could be any of those or whatever flavour of popular music I'm in the mood for at the moment. It's usually the latter when I'm doing administrative things like working on The Scriptorium or other online stuff.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
I used to listen to music all the time when I wrote, and it always had to be something heavy and rock! But after my daughter was born and I took her nap times/mornings/late night to write, I started writing in silence... and well, I've kinda become used to it now. Even when she's at preschool I find myself writing in silence... though sometimes I do remember to put something on... lately it's either Linkin Park, Evanescence, or the Daredevil soundtrack.
See, still has to be upbeat rock!
It's always interesting to hear what people listen to while writing. I know that headphones could be an option, but I just can't write with the music pounding inside my ears - too distracting and I feel closed off, can't hear my daughter in the other room! Such is the life of a mother, I suppose...

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
It all depends on my mood. Silence is golden, classical is relaxing, but then AC/DC is energizing.
Cheers,

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
I haven't ever tried to write while listening to anything. I might have to give that a try though I think I would stick to something instrumental . . . I have some great stuff here, some bluegrass, Jim Brickman, piano/cello compilations, etc.
Otherwise, I listen to such a variety of stuff and a lot of my writing . . . especially poetry . . . will stem from that. This week I have been listening, almost exclusively to Sister Hazel's Live Live cd. Energetic stuff but poetic at the same time.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
Usually I don't listen to anything, but that's also because I share a workroom with my husband. When he's playing or programming, I'm wary with music.
I have some game music I love for background (which is for what it was written), other than that I generally use the LOTR soundtracks, some Enya, a best of Christ de Burgh, OMD (a German group), Allan Parson's Project, Jean Michel Jarre, and Apocalyptica.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
Oh, Firle, I used to listen to Chris deBurgh a lot some years ago! But the albums we had were...well, albums, and we never got around to replacing them with the CD's, and the albums got shuffled off to storage land... But interestingly, it's only about a week ago my husband was saying we should try to find some.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
We've been making CD copies of albums, so we can play them in the computer. It works fairly well.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
Uncle Mac,
I'm starting to feel old here. No rock in my CD player. I need something that does not make me want to sing or dance, something soothing or that can fade into the background. I listen to a lot of guitar instrumentals, soft blues, folk . . . Right now I'm on the third listen in a row to Mary Chapin Carpenter's time-sex-love album. Very soothing.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
I'm listening to Black Eyed Peas ( a new hip hop band), but I'm fairly eclectic to what I listen to on average. I can go from Loreena McKennit to Metalica in a heartbeat.
Don't feel too old. I'm an 80's refugee and when I see that VH1 Classic is considering the music of the decade I grew up in as oldies and I see the likes of Britney Spears, I start to feel my age too.
