Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
Our newest CD's are Five for Fighting and Rufus Wainwright and Cold Play. Not exactly cutting edge but I think that's pretty darned 'hip' for two old folks who only listened to 60's and 70's music for years (still the best ).
I don't usually listen to music while writing but I think I'll try it. My guess is that it might keep my censor quiet (listening) when I'm in that transition phase... trying to get into it... but would then fade away when I got engaged. I'll report back.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
Oh Jay, I have a couple decades on you. I grew up in the 60s and 70s, but I'm open-minded. I just need work music that doesn't send my brain off in too many directions at once.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
Thanks to my stepdad, I learned to appreciate Crosby, Stills & Nash, Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane. My mom was all disco, however.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
Your MOM was disco? Ah, I am old!!!!! I'm Beatles and psychedelia. I remember Crosby, Stills and Nash, too. Oh well, in my heart, I'm still a teenager.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
Whoa... I guess I'm the oldest here at 55 and counting. I not only remember Crosby, Stills and Nash, I remember that Crosby was one of The Byrds, I remember Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, I remember that their harmonies weren't always that great but their lyrics were. Anyone remember the Yardbirds? Eric Clapton! It's great to be really old. Heck, I even remember when Buddy Holly's record Peggy Sue came out. I was about 7 years old but I remember it because it was SO different and my dad hated it! Seems like yesterday...(not really).
By the way, I did listen to music yesterday as I started writing and it did help me to transition into it. When the CD stopped, I didn't even notice. It helps if it's something unfamiliar... otherwise I'm too inclined to sing along.
cheers,

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
Oh, thank God. I'm only 52. I had forgotten about Crosby's earlier years, but I do indeed remember the Yardbirds and lots of other groups from that era.
Go, baby boomers!

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
Jay,
Whoa, Black-eyed Peas! My kids would be impressed! Actually, I like them a lot too. My taste is very eclectic as well. I had much older brothers growing up so instead of watching Seseme Street (yes, it premiered the year of my birth), I grew up listening to the Beatles, CS&N, Creedance Clearwater Revival. Thanks to my mom, I listened to a lot of country and western . . .Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Jr, Willie Nelson.
I played the piano when I was younger and developed a great love of classical and jazz music.
My children have kept me young and current in my music choices now. I love sharing music with them. It is a language that binds our hearts.

Re: What's In YOUR CD Player?
At this moment, Ruth is Stranger than Richard by Robert Wyatt. But there's no way I could listen to anything like this when I'm writing seriously -- it's too involving, I have to stop and listen to what it's doing.
I prefer to have some music playing while I write but it needs to be something that doesn't distract me. Instrumental music works, or songs with foreign lyrics (which I can't sing along to). Or really basic rock music.
I don't pick specific music for inspiration or mood setting. There is no mental connection, that I'm aware of, between the music and what I'm writing.
