Romantic lead Characters
Ok, I have a slight problem. One of my stories has an amazing Hero. I feel in love with him myself. The problem: my heroine who I have created isn't his match at all. She isn't as strong as he is. I have tried tweeking her a bit, but I'm still not happy. Should I save her for another novel and create a new gal, or should I stick with her? I have worked on this for a while, so I don't want to get rid of her. Any opinion would be great. i haven't run into this before. She has kinda gotten 'out of control'.

Re: Romantic lead Characters
As you know, I don't write a lot of romance (although there are romantic side-stories in some of my writings). But I would say that for romance, your main characters have to have "chemistry." You know when you watch a movie sometimes and you just don't believe the chemistry between the actors who have been cast in the romantic roles? I think that in a novel, if you as the writer don't feel that chemistry between your characters, you're not going to be able to write it convincingly enough for readers to believe it.
Whether or not you should dump her and get him a new girl--I don't know. Maybe she's the right one, but you don't know enough about her yet. Maybe she has secrets you still have to discover. Maybe it's not tweaking that she needs, it's a complete makeover! Taking her out is a hard decision to make, but if you've done everything you can think of with her and it's not working, and she's keeping you from working on the story, then maybe you do need a fresh face. You could give it a try, at least. You can always bring her back if the new one doesn't work either.
Just some ideas,
Sherry

Re: Romantic lead Characters
I agree with Sherry. Give the girl a chance to show you her real self (it sounds like she needs some encouragement or maybe she doesn't know her own feelings yet), but if you feel strongly that you do know all her secrets, then maybe it is time for a replacement.

Re: Romantic lead Characters
Thanks. I agree with you both. I'm not going to take her out, but I have definatly decided she needs a make over, and he needs just a tad of an adjustment. Taking her out all together would be hard, as she is the one I have wanted him to be with since the beginning. Thanks for the help!!

Re: Romantic lead Characters
Here's another thought--maybe he sees something in her that she doesn't even see herself--but if he can bring it out, they will be more "right" for each other.
Did that make sense?

Yeah, that makes perfect sense to me. I like your take on that.
