posticon Hesitation about querying editors

I don't know if this is the right section for this question, but I hope I can find someone who can help me.

I am hesitant about querying editors and not having the article written. For the last 5 years I have been writing short stories and if an idea I had didn't work I went onto another story that did work. But if I'm given an assignmentt I can't just say, "sorry it didn't work, I'm going to submit a differant article instead." Does anybody have advice for me so ideas don't just remain ideas maybe even that I can apply to my fiction so that I can excute my ideas without any of them falling flat?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Hi WriterGirl!

There's a discussion on this very topic going on in the next topic down, "I need a walk through." I think the advice usually is to query first, then write, so you don't waste your time if there's no market for the article.

However, if you're worried about meeting a deadline or being able to deliver the article as promised, I'd say go ahead and just write it first. You'll feel better and more confident, and probably produce a better article because you won't have the stress to deal with. Later on you might feel more able to do things the other way around, but for now do what makes you comfortable.

Hey, and drop by the Water Cooler and introduce yourself! We'd all love to know more about you and your writing.

Nice to see you here!

I understand exactly how you are feeling. I'm trying non-fiction for the first time, and yea I'm going to do it backwards like Sherry said. I'm just going to close my eyes and jump........Come on, do it with me. I don't usually like doing things alone, it would be nice to have a partner.

I'm going to go ahead and write the article then write my query. I think I can make it happen. But once I made the decision to query after I write the article, my self confidence went up and I feel like I won't let anyone down. No pressure. Like Sherry said, the confidence will come around so I can start turning it around to querying, then submitting.

Just letting you know you're not alone. Let me know what you do.

One of the features of technical writing is that you have to deliver even if you can't make it happen the way you wanted.
Sometimes it takes a tiny shift to make something spring forth, sometimes it takes special earth-moving equipment.
If it requires earth-moving equipment, a follow-up with the editor is in your future.
