Start of a trend?

One publisher has posted new guidelines saying, basically, "We're not going to reply to submissions unless we want to buy the manuscript. If you haven't heard from us in four months, consider yourself free to submit elsewhere."

What do you think of this? On the one hand, it makes an impersonal process even more impersonal (one might even say to the point of rudeness), on the other hand, it would necessitate strict record-keeping on the part of writers, but no more rejection letters.

Thoughts?

I think they are lazy, and after a while they'll get burned. The moment they no longer manage to go through their slush pile in four months, they'll miss out on potential stories.

Of course, you'll save on those SASE. emoticon

I've never understood why sending a short letter, or better still an email, is such a big problem.

Of course, there would be no more waiting for a year and still hearing nothing (or getting the rejection letter) but my first thoughts was they expect us to be professional, but they can't be professional themselves.

*grr*

I hope its not the start of a trend. I'd perfer to get a letter of rejection then not hear anything at all. At least when you get a letter, you know that you can move on. But if they didn't there would always be that hope, no matter how long its been, that they will still reply. They just want a career made in the shade, lazily picking a few stories from a huge pile every few months when they didn't really look at in the first place.

Ouch. Talk about making our jobs that much more fun. I agree, though, they'd be missing out if they just decided to toss the slush pile that's more than four months old (or whatever deadline they have going). You never know what gems you find when you sort through the junk pile. While cleaning out my desk the other day I found $1.37 in change, an unused pad of Post-It Notes, an overdue library book (oops), my long-lost draft notes, and a great little idea for a short story I'd sribbled on the back of a Chinese take-out menu. Those huge piles of submissions editors have waiting to be read could contain The Great American Novel.

But, hey, as you said, you would save a lot on those SASE.
