Re: Sent out my first short story

Not meaning to hijack Firle's thread, but there's a book you should look for in your library, McDoogle; "It's a Bunny-Eat-Bunny World: A Writer's Guide to Surviving and Thriving in Today's Competitive Children's Book Market" by Olga Litowinsky. I found it really good.

Firle, just keep sending it out, like you're doing. Most of the advice I've read says don't even think about trying to "fix" a story until it's been rejected seven times. (!) Although I think if you get specific comments on problems with the story, you can break that rule. I do, anyhow.

(yes, I'm still alive... emoticon )

I just sent it out again today. It took me ages to find the energy to get it printed at a copy shop (our printer at home is not good enough), and to take it to the post office.

But now it's out there again! And it's going to Canada, too. emoticon

And it got rejected again. Ah, well.

They suggest a younger audience, and I can understand why. I'll try for a YA mag next.

Firle, there's a YA magazine called "Cricket" that I've never submitted to, but I know folks who have a good experience with them. The guidelines are at http://www.cricketmag.com/pages_content.asp?page_id=25
I think they pay well, too.

Thanks for the link, Sherry, I'll bookmark it.

Unfortunately, their max. limit for stories is 2,000 words, and Minkus is beyond that. emoticon

Ok, since I never made a separate thread for it, here it goes:

"Sequoia" was rejected as well, got the letter today. Yes, I was aiming high, and at least they said it was "well written", which is something. So, I'm not too disappointed. emoticon

"Sequioa" is on its way to another high-end US market. Considering it'll take a least a week to get there, I don't really expect any answers before January.

Good luck, Firle! Any kind of comment is generally a good thing.
