I find that a lot of markets are closed for submissions now because they are swamped. I'm not sure that's a good sign.

I just got a note saying that one of the ones I'd submitted to had decided not to go ahead with the project. Drat!
No, I don't think it is a good sign. There are more and more folks deciding to take up writing all the time, and although I want to encourage new writers, it's a fact that it makes it more difficult to be seen. I think, more than ever, that persistence is what will pay off in the end.

Yes, that's the other side of the equation. Even the professional short speculative fiction magazines, like Asimov's, F&SF, and Realms of Fantasy are always fighting the battle of declining readership. The number of small press outfits that start up and then fold after a relatively short time--very depressing.
