Required element?

In editing my YA fantasy (aimed at readers 12+) I am wondering if I should have included an element of romance between two of the characters. On reflection, most of the YA I've read lately, even in the fantasy line, seems to include something along this line, especially if the MC is female, as mine is.

If you have any experience in reading/writing this genre, do you think romance, however mild, is a required element?

Sf,

I'm wondering if an added romance angle would add to the appeal of the story from a marketing sense.

But as a former 12+ boy, I would say that would be a turn off in a Fantasy story. For me 'Wizard of EarthSea' is a good example. Just action and adventure. No romance angle and it was great. Other books in series gave Sparrowhawk Ged a love interest, and I didn't care for those as much.

But if your target audience is actually YA Girls... then maybe this the way to go...

I can't speak for 'you guys'! emoticon
