My first reading is on Wednesday!

The literature house in my town offers a special reading event. Four authors get 15 min each to present unpublished text. For each text there are five minutes of discussion. In the end, the audience gets to vote on their favourite, which is then published on the website of the literature house.

I applied for this about three weeks ago. Today I got the invitation for May 11th. I can't think about this without getting the jitters, although I do have experience with presentations. But this is my own short story!

Oh, Firle, that's wonderful!

Yes, there IS a difference between doing a presentation and reading one's own fiction, isn't there? Especially when you know there will be discussion immediately afterward. I've done several readings but never in that situation.

Can't wait to hear how it goes! Although I know you'll be simply great.

Re: My first reading is on Wednesday!

Well, I did manage to read my story in a clear voice in spite of my trembling. I managed to captivate my audience. My husband shed a tear at the story.

Yet the winner was another story, well done and more "literary" than my fantasy one. The author is a nice guy and I don't begrude him the win. I just find it sad how much fantasy is despised by those who think they know literature. I was treated to a very arrogant lecture by the man running the literature house.

At least, I've been invited to come back. I think I'll take them up on that offer, no matter what. I got free wine, after all. emoticon

Gads, that's awful! I don't think that was appropriate behaviour on his part.

However, you felt you carried it off, got a good vibe from the audience, and have been invited back, so I'd say that was a success. And every chance to do a reading is a good experience, I think. So congratulations and well done! Maybe you will convert some "literary" types into fantasy lovers before you are through. emoticon

I'm thrilled that reading went well, in a way, and that you were able to read with confidence and really capture your audience. Congratulation!

As for the world of literature, it seems so odd to me that literature as a whole can take itself so seriously and not include other, in many cases more popular, forms of story. It's all story, it's all revealing, it's not better or worse.
