Re: Reading

I finished Bruce Holland Rogers' Word Work and enjoyed it very much. He talks about a lot of different aspects of writing, from practical to spiritual (in the broad sense). I'd recommend it.

I'm still reading Strange But Not A Stranger. It's a collection of short stories by one of my favorite authors, so I'm pacing myself to make it last. emoticon

I'm also reading Forty Signs of Rain by Kim Stanley Robinson. It's a very near future look at global warming and its effects. This is the first book in a trilogy.

Re: Reading

My reading material is a bit morbid, so I won't bother listing titles. It makes a change to reading fantasy though.

And it has helped me see that I need to vary my genres a bit too. For that reason, I have a few non-fantasy books on the top of my pile.

Re: Reading

I have been reading novels from the romance line I love. It's the line I hope to be one day published by. (Harliquin Blaze). I have also read 'Wicked' and 'Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister' by Gregory McGuire. Both were excellent, in my opinion.

Right now I'm reading the first book in one of the Forgotten Realsm serires I got for Christamas...LOVE it and it really helps as I really like Richard Baker's style and am getting some good ideas to work with my novels from this. I recently re-read Memoirs of a Geisha cuz I love it, and am going to be reading Lovely Bones, Labyrinth, and a couple other Fantasy novels I've collected so far....

Re: Reading

I read Jim Butcher's Storm Front last week. I didn't intend to read it in less than 24 hours, just shouldn't have read the first few pages, I guess--then I was hooked!

Sherry
P.S. I wrote a review of it on my blog if anyone's interested. The link is http://sherrydramsey.blogspot.com/2007/02/review-storm-front-by-jim-butcher.html

Storm Front was the first Harry Dresden book I read, though I didn't realise it was the first written (I think it's a series you can read in any order). I completely agree with your review.

They've only shown two episodes of the TV series in the UK so far but so far I'm enjoying it.

Hmmm. Judging from your review, it seems that book should be on my Amazon wish list. I certainly won't stoop to read the translation.

Re: Reading

I'm now reading the second book in the Kim Stanley Robinson series, Fifty Degrees Below. The story is getting interesting. The first book was a little slow, a lot of things being set in motion, but the characters and subject were intriguing enough to keep me going.

I also have the second Harry Dresden book out of the library, but I'm trying to resist its siren call until I finish Robinson...I may not have the willpower, though...

Re: Reading

I've just finished the last issue of ASIMOV'S SCIENCE FICTION magazine. It's not one I read very often (I'm already an ANALOG subscriber, and I don't have time to read two of them a month!), but I noticed an import copy in a bookshop the other day and picked it up.

It had some "ok" stories but nothing riveting. I'm not sure why I find it less interesting than the very similar Analog, but there is a definite difference in tone. I can't really put my finger on it... The same writers crop up in both magazines but the stories in Analog are a better "fit" for me, somehow.

I suppose it must be down to differeing editorial policy. Curious...

Re: Reading

David, that's interesting. After all, both magazines are supposed to serve the same market.

Can you pin it down on anything other than taste? Choice of setting, maybe, or the kind of characters? More or less action?
