Anyone here listen to podcasts? I have a few that I listen to regularly and think are really great, if anyone's interested I'll pass them along. And if anyone has any of their own to share...

Re: Podcasts

I see I never followed up on this. Here are some of the ones I like, in no particular order:

This Week in Science (light-hearted science news program)

Escape Pod
(short speculative fiction stories)

The Word Nerds (words, language, and why we say the things we do)

The Secrets: The Podcast for Writers (Michael A. Stackpole's advice for writers)

Decoder Ring Theatre ("radio drama" style original audio plays)

Re: Podcasts

This is an interesting list, I'll check it out (in my spare time... hysterical laughter).
There are a bunch of people experimenting with podcasts for technical writing topics, delivering interviews and topic summaries this way. One clever soul suggested that one of the tech writing lists provide podcast summaries of each thread... LOL! This is a list that sends out hundreds of emails a day!

Heh. I don't listen to them in my "spare time"--that would be never! I listen while I'm doing other things. Podcasts are a natural fit for me, I think, because I'm a big public radio junkie. So now I just substitute a podcast sometimes instead of the radio. For instance, I listened to a ton of the Decoder Ring Theatre plays while I spent the day cleaning my office this week. I also listen on my .mp3 player when I'm walking, and when I'm drawing. I'm a BIG multi-tasker! emoticon

P.S. It's so nice to see you, Wanda!

Re: Podcasts

I listened to my first podcast last week. It was short, so I remained focused and enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I listen to the radio all day, Sherry. But...I rarely "hear" any of it. emoticon

I might try listening to a podcast whilst working on my family tree though. That might be good. I'll see.

Re: Podcasts

I listened to my first podcasts just a few weeks ago -- a series of Early Music shows by...well, as far as I can tell a completely random person who just happens to have a good CD collection.

But it took me ages to figure out how to listen to them. In the end I hunted through the HTML source on his site, worked out the locations of the files, and FTPed them down to my computer. I can't help thinking I'm misunderstandig something... I now have a piece of software that's supposed to "manage" podcasts but I haven't had time to install it, let alone learn how to use it.

Re: Podcasts

If your software is a podcatcher, like Juice (the one I use), it's very simple, David. Not a steep learning curve at all. Once you add the particular feed to your subscriptions list, it downloads the new installments for you. If you have questions about it once you install it I'll try to help out when I get back on Sunday.

Re: Podcasts

Yes Wanda I'm a technical writer and generally competent with computer software. But I find podcasts a bit mystifying because I don't really understand the concept. I mean, why do I need a special piece of software? If it's just an mp3 file I should be able to click its link in my browser and have it open automatically in media player (or right-click and Save As in order to play it later). But in my experience that doesn't happen... maybe I just had a bad experience?
