New Battlestar Galactica series
Is anybody else watching this? My brother had taped the four-hour miniseries so we borrowed that and watched it on the weekend, then watched the first two episodes of the series tonight. It is really good! Now we're only one episode behind so we're hoping to watch that and the newest one on the weekend.
Wow. It's excellent. And I speak as a fan of the old series, too.

Re: New Battlestar Galactica series
Yes!
I am absolutely blown away by the quality of writing in this series. Some episodes have had me, literally, on the edge of my seat. Others have raised moral issues that I'm still wrestling with. The characters are all compelling - even the dislikable ones. Even the minor characters are real and believeable and make you care what happens to them.
Honestly, I wish I could write that well!
The series finished last week in the UK (there were 13 episodes I think, and not a bad one in the bunch) so it sounds like you're a bit behind us. So I won't say any more, for fear of spoiling the plots...

Re: New Battlestar Galactica series
I liked the mini and the first two episodes, but have not had the time to watch it since. It took some getting used to because I was a fan of the original, and still am.
However, I think the visuals for the series are well thought out.
There are a few things that bug me though:
1) The us United State Navy terminology heavily throughout the show. This is alien sci-fi, and it bugs me to hear this because they should be using more alien terms, not Terran terms. Of course, that's only a minor complaint. While it bugs me, I do enjoy hearing it because I'm familiar with all of the terms used in a space navy sense. I guess it just makes me want to think that they are Terran instead of Caprican.
2) The Viper Fighters display markings inspired by the U.S. Air Force. The redesigned fighters look great, but again I was hoping the markings would look more alien.
3) A female Starbuck. That's still taking some getting used to. At least the actress prtraying the character is paying homage to Dirk Benedict by using some of his same mannerisms from her predecessor.
Overall, I do enjoy the show and I'm hoping to watch it this Friday. I only wish the Sci-Fi channel would re-run the new episodes again on the weekends.
Apologies if I nitpicked a liitle too much. I'm a geek, its what I do.

Re: New Battlestar Galactica series
I agree with your points, Jay, but I see then as positives, not negatives. (Er... that's not exactly the same as agreeing with them then, is it?)
I find the use of Terran military terminology enhances the show. The Caprican term for Apollo's job might might be Farrelgrouporleedu, but if his job description is what we would call a CAG then call him a CAG. Doing that actually helps my suspension of disbelief because it feels more real. You've got to assume they're translating the Caprican language into English for the viewer's benefit, so they should be translating all the jargon too. (I excuse "Frak" for nostalgic reasons!)

Yes, it's kind of like the discussion we had about the characters in one's fantasy or science fiction story speaking English. And I always liked to think that Earth wasthe lost thirteenth colony. So it could actually make sense that we would share certain things, right?

Re: New Battlestar Galactica series
It would, if they followed a parallel evolution theory. There were many things on Caprica in mini that imitated Earth.

Re: New Battlestar Galactica series
I am so, so very addicted to this show! Thanks alot, Sherry!
She's a total Sci-Fi Pusher! We don't have cable or satelite, so I never would have known what I was missing if it weren't for her showing me! My husband is leaving a meeting early Sunday so that we'll be able to squeeze in two more episodes. He is also badly in need of a fix. We've been talking about the moral issues and plot developments, and possible future plot developments non-stop all week.
Love it!

Re: New Battlestar Galactica series
Hey Jule,
I can really relate your hardship of no cable...no satellite...No Battleship Galatica! We were in the same boat! When I first heard there was going to be a new mini-series on cable, as a hard-core fan of the series in the 70's...I panicked. The solution was to have my parents in Michigan tape the series, and then they sent us the videos, via the mail.
I was surprised that as much as I liked the original...this new version of BG...isn't too bad...
I think Uncle Jay brings up an excellent point about the female version of Starbuck, and really summed up my view well. The actress did a decent job, but she just wasn't Starbuck. But the more I think about it... Who could have replaced Dirk's Starbuck? It was like he was born to play that part, and vice versa. I don't think any man, woman, or child could replace Dirk Benedict and his portrayal of Starbuck, and his suave attitude. So why not cast the role as a woman??? So, surprisingly...I'm OK with it, and even like the new Starbuck!
Say, does anyone rememeber that cheap hacked up 2nd series, designed to save money: "Galactica 1980"??? Ugh!

Re: New Battlestar Galactica series
Somehow I must have missed that one. However, it sounds like that was a blessing.
