Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Since I hail from Detroit, the Edmund Fitzgerald has always held a special spot in my heart. Detroit was, at one time, a port of some importance and the Eddie Fitz, as she was fondly known, was homeported out of Detroit.

As maritime disasters go, the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of all aboard her, was Detroit's equivalent of Titanic. I remember the news coverage, especially the service held at Mariner's Church, which is still standing.

Here is a great link to the ship:

On this History Channel special about Rogue Waves, it is speculated that the SS Edmund Fitzgerald may also have been sunk by such a wave in one of the Great Lakes.

Re: Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

I have heard that, too. Some investigators believe she may have been sunk by a seiche wave (this is a wave which can form on large lakes during storms and high winds). Take a wide-mouth mug, pour in water almost to the top, then blow on it and you will see the water start to pile up on side of cup opposite from where your lips are...this is essentially a mini-seiche). A rogue wave is unlikely as R.W.s tend to form on both coastal and open ocean...the most likely explanation (IMHO) is that she grounded on an unmarked shoal/ and or was sunk by a seiche wave.

Here she is...

She may have been sunk by "seiche wave". In my Webster's Dictionary, it describes such a wave as: an oscillation of the surface of a lake or landlocked sea that varies in period from a few minutes to several hours. Here she is pictured in such a condition...

I should try the blowing on the liquid inside my wide-mouthed coffee mug/bowl of milk after I've already eaten my cereal. How interesting a test to perform!?

Blowing gently on the tea in your cup produces a sort of mini-seiche.
